1. 개요

경기도 연천군에 위치한 면.

임진강과 접한 지역으로 동쪽은 연천읍·신서면, 남쪽은 군남면·왕징면, 서쪽은 왕징면, 북쪽은 군사분계선과 접해 있다.

2. 상세

대부분의 지역이 민통선 내에 있어서 실제 민간인이 거주하는 곳은 면 소재지인 삼곶리와 횡산리이며, 주변의 마거리, 적거리, 합수리 일대는 출입 영농이 이루어지고 있다.

유이한 민간인 거주 지역이자 중면 행정복지센터가 있는 삼곶리에는 백제 초기에 형성된 것으로 추정되는돌무지무덤이 있다. 거주민도 적고 찾는 이도 없는 낙후된 지역이었으나 2020년부터 이 돌무지무덤 주변의 임진강변 황무지 82,000㎡를 개간하여 정비하고 댑싸리 2만여 그루와 백일홍, 코스모스 등 심어 2021년 연천 임진강 댑싸리공원을 정식 개장했는데 댑싸리 성수기에는 월 단위로 10만명이 찾는 인기 관광지로 자리잡았다. 횡산리에는 태풍전망대가 있다.

민통선 표기된 관광지는 민간인 출입통제선 내부에 위치해 있어 방문 시 방문객 전원이 신분증을 지참하여 민통초소에 제출해야 한다.

현재 기준으로, 대한민국에 소재하고 있는 모든 읍·면·동을 통틀어서 가장 인구가 적은 곳들 중 한 곳이다.[7]

특히, 사무소가 있는 읍·면·동 중에서는 인구 뒤에서 1위에서 내려온 적이 없다. 인구 통계에서 중면보다 적은 철원군 근북면과(112명) 파주시 진동면(163명)은 각각 김화읍과 장단면에서 업무를 대신하고 있다. 심지어 인구 밀도로만 따지면 근북면이나 진동면보다 여기가 더 낮다.

9. 사건사고

이렇듯 정말 아무것도 없는 심심한 동네처럼 보이지만, 사실은 엄청난 긴장을 간직하고 있는 화약고 같은 곳이다. 일부 탈북민 단체들이 삼곶리에 대북전단을 풍선에 실어서 자주 날리기 때문에, 이에 대한 북한의 반발로 인해 2014년에는 면 사무소 부근까지 총탄이 날아오기도 하였다. 자세한 내용은 연천 대북전단 발원지 격파사격 참조.
