북아일랜드의 민요.2. 설명
런던데리의 아리아[1]는 북아일랜드 런던데리 일대에서 전해져 오는 민요이다. 선율이 서정적이고 아름답기 때문인지 재즈나 협주 등 다양한 장르로 편곡되어 연주되고 있다. 장례식에서도 자주 연주되는 곡이다.아일랜드가 영국의 지배를 받던 1910년대 당시, 이 곡에 잉글랜드의 법조인이자 작사가인 '프레더릭 웨덜리'가 가사를 붙여 'Danny Boy'를 발표해 세계구급 인지도를 얻었다.[2] 한국에서는 '아! 목동아'로 현제명이 번안하여 발표했다.
Danny Boy의 대략적인 내용은 전쟁 혹은 반란에 가담하러 집을 떠나는 자식을 보내는 부모의 심정을 노래했다는 설이 대표적이며, 1918년에 발굴된 가사에서 Danny Boy의 여성 버전인 'Eily Dear' 가 있다. 때문에 남자들이 부를 때는 Eily Dear, 여자가 부를때는 원본대로 Danny Boy라고 불러야 한다는 설도 있다.
