윤도현의 헤비 록 사랑은 이번이 처음은 아니다. 과거 ‘가리지 좀 마’ 같은 곡에서 그는 고등학생 때 스래시/데스 메탈을 좋아했던 메탈키드로서 장르에 대한 사랑을 부분적으로 표현한 바 있고, 99년작 ‘한국 Rock 다시 부르기’에선 당시 유행했던 뉴 메탈 스타일을 힘껏 인용하기도 했다. 신해철처럼 헤비메탈이 목적지는 아니었을지언정, 적어도 “현실에서 벗어나 온전히 음악에만 집중할 수 있는 장르여서” 좋아한다는 윤도현에게 헤비메탈이 ‘그냥 한 번 건드려보는’ 장르가 아닌 건 분명하다. 그가 이번 앨범에 ‘도전’이라는 전제를 붙인 건 한국인들의 헤비메탈에 대한 지나친 거부반응과 냉소 때문이지, 자신과 상관없는 장르에 뛰어들어보겠다는 초보자로서 의지 표현이 아니었던 것이다. 윤도현은 누구보다 메탈 음악의 속성을 잘 알고 있고, 그래서 자신감도 있었던 듯 보인다. 이는 첫 트랙 ‘Voyeurist’와 마지막 트랙 ‘Daydream’에 숨어 있는 그루비한 기타 리프 훅과 타이틀 트랙 ‘Orchid’처럼 7분짜리 메탈 곡 하나를 짜임새 있게 뽑아낼 줄 아는 솜씨 등을 통해 촘촘히 증명되고 있다. 교실 헤드뱅잉 시퀀스가 정점을 찍는 ‘Rebellion’의 후련한 뮤직비디오에서도 윤도현의 메탈 사랑이 아낌없이 과시된 건 물론이다.
