1. 개요

2014년 9월 23일 발매된 켄드릭 라마의 노래. 로스 앤젤레스 출신 프로듀서 Rahki가 프로듀싱을 맡았다.

2015년 발매된 앨범 To Pimp A Butterfly에도 수록되어 있으나,[1] 앨범 발매 이전 나왔던 싱글 버전과 앨범 버전은 곡 구성, 가사 등에서 많은 차이를 보인다. 그러나 두 곡 모두 아이즐리 브라더스(The Isley Brothers)의 That Lady를 샘플링으로 하고 있다.[2][3]

공식 뮤직비디오. 앞서 언급했던 로널드 아이즐리[4] 뿐만 아니라 조지클린턴[5] 역시 카메오로 출연했다.

3. 싱글 버전

2014년 발매된 싱글 버전에서는 별도의 다른 사운드 없이 That Lady의 샘플링을 인트로로 쓰고 있으며, 벌스, 훅, 아웃트로가 명확하게 나누어져 있다.

또한 앨범 커버 역시 눈길을 끄는데, 블러즈를 상징하는 빨간색 옷을 입은 사람과 크립스를 상징하는 옷을 입은 사람이 모여서 손으로 하트를 만들고 있다. 이는 블러즈와 크립스 사이의 평화를 원한다는 메세지로 해석되고 있다.

4. 앨범 버전

힙합 역사상 최고의 명반 중 하나인 To Pimp A Butterfly 최후반부에 수록되어 있으며, 노래를 부르는 도중 갑자기 Come to the front를 외치는 등 마치 라이브 공연을 하듯이 진행된다. 그러다가 3번째 벌스를 치는 도중 관중들이 논쟁을 일으키면서 관중 소리가 커지자 라마는 갑자기 노래를 꺼달라고 한 뒤, 지금까지 싸움으로 인해 얼마나 많은 흑인들이 희생되었는지, 그리고 앞으로 어떻게 나아가야 될지를 이야기하기 시작한다. 이후 아카펠라를 하겠다고 한 뒤 아카펠라로 벌스 4가 나온 뒤 노래가 끝난다.

싱글 버전 커버에서 부터 알 수 있듯이 블러즈와 크립간의 갈등으로 인해 수많은 흑인들이 지금까지 희생되어 왔으며, 수년의 세월이 지나 많이 나아지긴 했지만, 아직도 갈등의 끝은 보이지 않는 현실을 담은 노래이기에 앨범 버전에서 이러한 구성으로 가는 것은 상당히 인상깊은 진행이다.

발매 뒤 빌보드 핫 100에서 39위로 데뷔하는 등 성적도 나쁘지 않았으며, 영국에서는 실버(Silver)를 기록하기도 했다. 또한 2015 그래미 어워드 Best Rap Performance와 Best Rap Song 부문에서 수상하기도 했다.
