1. 개요

鍍金 / plating, gilding[1]

표면처리법의 한 종류로, 금속 표면에 다른 금속 성분의 박막을 입히는 행위. 일본어로 멕키(鍍, めっき)[2]. 주로 부식을 막거나 표면의 광택을 위해서 도금을 한다. 전자는 철판에 아연을 입힌 함석이나 주석을 입힌 양철이 대표적이고, 후자는 은에 금을 입힌 금메달이나 구리에 금을 입힌 금동 문화유산이 대표적. 두 가지 이상의 금속을 완전히 용융시켜 원래의 재료와는 다른 성질을 지니게 하는 합금과는 큰 차이가 있다.

금속 외의 표면 처리 방식도 있다. 대표적으로 유리질 코팅인 에나멜(법랑)이 있다.

2. 주로 쓰이는 분야 및 예시

이어폰 혹은 USB의 단자에도 많이 쓰이는데, 끼고 빼는 일이 엄청나게 잦은 이어폰 특성상 반 년도 사용 안 했는데 도금이 자기도 모르게 벗겨지는 경우가 많다. 금 도금된 단자는 금의 특성상 전기 전도가 잘돼서 음질이 좋다고 하는데 더 정확히는 단자가 부식되지 않아서 음질이 좋은 것이다. 단자에 금 도금을 하는 건 단자의 부식을 막아 접촉 불량을 줄이려는 목적이다. 그래서 정비 때 말고는 분리할 일이 없는 단자라면 금 도금이 불필요하다.[3] 하지만 음향기기 같은 경우에는 이동이 잦고 야외에서 사용되므로 습기나 염분에 노출될 일도 많고 아날로그 회로라서 전기적 트러블에 민감하기 때문에 무산소동과 금도금 단자를 채택하고 있다. 디지털 단자도 녹슬면 안 좋아서 고급 제품은 모두 단자에 금도금 처리를 하고 나온다. 단자를 금으로 도금하는 게 그렇게 비싼 것도 아니고 제품을 더 고급스럽게 보이게 하는 데다가 실질적인 기능도 분명히 있기 때문이다.

3. 방식

도금에는 대표적으로 두 가지 방법이 있는데, 전기를 사용하는 전기도금과 니켈, 구리, 수은 등을 사용하는 무전해도금 또는 화학도금이 있다.

전기도금은 근대에 들어와 만들어진 방식이다. 방법은 도금 대상에 전극을 연결하고, 금, 은, 니켈 등의 도금하고자 하는 금속이 포함된 전해질 역할의 도금액에 담근다. 그 다음에 도금할 대상에 -극을 연결하고, 도금액에 +극을 연결한 금속을 넣는다. 이렇게 되면 산화와 환원의 원리에 따라 -극에 연결된 금속에는 도금이 되고, +극에 연결된 금속은 검게 변하거나 표면이 울퉁불퉁해진다.[4] 플라스틱과 같은 전기가 통하지 않는 물체에는 흑연 등의 도전물질을 칠해서 도금이 되도록 만들 수 있다.[5]

화학도금은 전통적으로 사용된 방식이다. 우선 대상물 위에 수은을 바른다. 그리고 그 위에 도금하고자 하는 금속 박판을 올리고 가열하면 수은이 날아가면서 대상물 위에 도금이 안착된다. 금속염 수용액의 산화-환원 반응을 이용한 것도 있는데 질산은 수용액을 이용한 거울 반응이 가장 유명하다.

무전해 도금은 현대산업에서 널리쓰이는 방식으로, 보통 촉매를 입힌후 도금액에 침지하여 도금하는방식이다. 무전해 도금은 전해도금과달리 환원제를 통한 전자공여 방식으로 용액내에서 산화환원반응이 일어난다. 구체적으로 무전해 니켈 도금액에서는 차인산소다, 무전해 구리 도금액에서는 포르말린이 환원제로 사용된다.

위에 언급한 니켈, 구리 외에도 무전해 금, 무전해 주석 등의 도금액이 있는데 위의 산화환원 방식과 달리 이는 치환반응을 이용한 도금액이다. 보통 PCB나 반도체 패키징에서에서는 ENIG (Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold)공정에 사용되며, 무전해 니켈을 처리한 다음 치환형 금도금액에 침지하여 회로에 금을 도금하는 방식에서 사용된다.

용사분무도금이라는 것도 있는데, 도금할 물체 표면에 금속을 녹여 에어브러시나 분무기로 액체를 뿌리듯 금속을 뿌리는 것을 말한다.

융해금속침지도금은 반대로 아예 도금으로 입힐 금속을 녹인 뒤, 여기에 도금할 물건을 풍덩 집어넣었다 빼내 겉에 피막을 만드는 방법이다. 초콜릿 퐁뒤를 생각하면 이해하기 쉽다. 가장 간단한 방법이지만 표면이 균일하게 되기 힘든 건 물론이거니와 도금하고자 하는 물건이 도금용의 금속보다 낮은 온도에서 녹는다면 불가능하다는 단점이 있다. 그러나 공정이 간단하기 때문에 융점이 낮은 금속(주석, 아연, 알루미늄 등)을 융점이 높은 금속(철) 표면에 입힐 때는 산업적으로 널리 사용된다. 산업적으로 생산되는 거의 대부분의 아연 도금 강판과 갈바륨[6] 도금 강판이 용융침지도금에 의해 생산된다. 양철도 일부는 용융침지도금으로 생산된다.

진공도금(증착도금)은 근래에 생긴 새로운 도금법이다. 도금시 액체를 사용하지 않는 건식도금법 중 하나인데, 진공 속에 도금할 물건을 넣고 그 안에서 금속 원소를 승화시켜 도금할 물건 표면에 피막을 만드는 것이다. 주로 플라스틱이나 사진 렌즈, 회로 등을 만들 때 쓰인다. 반도체에서의 적용은 PVD 참고.
