1. 개요

엘튼 존의 1975년 정규 10집 Rock of the Westies의 3번 트랙이자 리드 싱글이다.

2. 곡 구성

일렉트릭 기타와 신시사이저, 마림바 등 각종 악기들로 휴양지 풍의 시원스러운 분위기를 연출한 경쾌한 록 곡이며, 1970년대 중반 당시 빠르게 퍼지고 있던 디스코 열풍의 영향을 받은 곡이기도 하다. 가사는 뉴욕에서 지내는 자메이카인 매춘부와 그녀를 데리고 가고 싶어 하는 흑인 남성에 대해 묘사했다.[1]

1975년 7월 미국 콜로라도주의 레코딩 스튜디오 '카리부 랜치'에서 《Rock of the Westies》를 작업했을 때 녹음했다. 이 곡에서 ARP 신시사이저와 멜로트론은 엘튼 존 밴드의 키보디스트였던 제임스 뉴튼 하워드가 연주했다.[2] 버니 토핀은 가사를 썼을 때 곡을 듣기도 전에 히트곡을 썼다는 걸 알았다고 밝혔다.[3]

엘튼 존이 1973년 설립한 음반사 로켓 레코드 컴퍼니에 소속했던 영국의 가수 키키 디가 백 보컬을 맡았다.[4]

3. 발매

영국에서는 DJM 레코드를 통해 1975년 9월 19일 싱글로 발매했고 미국에서는 MCA 레코드를 통해 9월 29일 싱글로 발매했다. B면에는 키키 디 커버곡 Sugar on the Floor를 수록했다.[5] 미국 빌보드 핫 100 1위, 캐나다 4위, 뉴질랜드 4위, 호주 12위, 영국 14위 등 기록했다. 빌보드 핫 100에서 1위를 기록한 다섯 번째 곡이 되었고 1976년 빌보드 핫 100 연말 차트에서 65위, 1958년~2018년 빌보드 핫 100 올타임 차트에서 502위를 기록했다. RIAA 기준으로 미국에서 100만 장 이상의 판매고를 올리며 플래티넘 인증을 받았다.[6]

로켓 레코드 컴퍼니 소속 가수였던 닐 세다카의 곡이자 엘튼 존이 백 보컬로 참여한 (합동 싱글은 아니다) "Bad Blood"를 제치고 1975년 11월 첫째 주부터 셋째 주까지 3주 연속 1위를 기록하다가 1975년 11월 넷째 주에는 케이시 앤 더 선샤인 밴드의 디스코 곡 That's the Way (I Like It)에 의해 밀려났다.[7]

엘튼 존은 Dan Dare (Pilot of the Future)를 리드 싱글로 발매하려고 했지만 전직 매니저 존 리드는 "Island Girl"을 대신 발매하자고 주장했다.[8]

6. 라이브

1975년 〈West of the Rockies〉 순회공연부터 1990년 Sleeping with the Past 순회공연까지 가끔씩 불렀다.[9] 공연 기획자 애덤 체스터에 의하면, 마지막 세계 투어 2018년 〈Farewell Yellow Brick Road〉의 리허설 때 키를 낮추고 이 곡을 불렀으나 너무 방방 뛴다는 이유로 본 공연에서 부르지 않았다고 한다.[10]

솔로 공연이며, 1974년 곡 The Bitch Is Back와 연결해서 불렀다.
