1. 개요

일본 나가노현 주신 지방에 위치한 도시.

2. 역사

시의 유래는 타케다 가문의 침공으로 멀리 도망 간 오가사와라 나가토키의 셋째 아들 사다요시가 1582년에 시나노국을 회복했을 때 오랜 숙원을 기다린 끝에 이루었다고 술회한 계기로 지금의 마츠모토가 되었다.

2021년 4월 1일부로 중핵시로 승격되었다.

3. 지리

나가노현 중앙에서 약간 서쪽에 자리잡고 있으며 현청 소재지 나가노시에서 남서쪽으로 75km, 아이치현 나고야시에서 북동쪽으로 190km, 도쿄도 특별구에서 서북쪽으로 240km에 위치하고 있다. 게다가 서쪽의 히다산맥과 동쪽의 치쿠마산지까지는 광대하다. 이러한 특성 덕에 일본 알프스 쪽으로 가는 관문 역할을 하고 있다.

하천에서는 카미코치 방면에서 흐르는 아즈사 강이 시의 서부를 흐르고 둘로 나뉘는 듯이 횡단하는 나라이 강과 맑은 물인 메토바 강이 횡단하고 있다.

산간 지역은 호타카타케과 야리가타케가 있지만, 시가지에서 가까운 조넨산맥 때문에 가려서 보이지 않아 조넨타케나 우츠쿠시가하라 고원을 많이 찾고 있다. 주부 산악국립공원 , 야츠가타케 주신 고원 국가지정공원이 시내에 있으며, 전자에는 특별 천연기념물인 뇌조가 서식한다. 또한 경승지인 카미코치도 시내에 있다.

한국보다 위도에 비해 상대적으로 따뜻한 일본 치고는 기후가 꽤 한랭한 동네이다.[2] 해발고도 600~700m 지대에 위치해 있고[3] 바다에서도 제법 멀기 때문에 온난 습윤 기후(Cfa)와 냉대 습윤 기후(Df)의 경계선에 놓여 있다. 1월 평균 기온은 -0.3°C로 서울(-1.9°C)보다 높지만, 최저기온 기록이 무려 -24.8°C에 달한다. 이는 서울의 기록(-23.1°C)보다도 낮은 수치이다. 그러면서도 폭염 또한 만만치 않은 동네로, 7~8월에 낮 최고기온 30°C 이상은 기본이다.

4. 경제

일본 평균보다 1차 산업과 2차 산업의 비중이 높고 3차 산업의 비중이 낮은 도시이다. 취업자 수 기준 1차 산업 5.8%, 2차 산업 24.2%, 3차 산업 70.0%의 비중을 차지한다.[4]

농업의 경우 주요 작물은 쌀이지만 이곳 자체가 해발고도가 높다 보니 고랭지 기후를 활용한 고랭지 채소 재배가 활발하여 수박, 양배추 등의 재배도성하다. [5] 이곳의 농가 호수는4,576호이다.

일렉트릭 기타의 산지로서 명성이 높은 도시이다. 마츠모토는 전통적으로 목공 산업이 발달하였던 곳이었는데, 이 목공 산업이 고도 경제 성장기인 1950-60년대 바이올린, 클래식 기타 등을 생산하는 악기 제조업 형태로서 발달하게 된다. 이때 바이올린 제조를 목표로 했던 회사가 업종을 일렉기타 제조로 바꾸게 되면서 일렉 기타의 산지로서 발전하게 되었다.[6] 대표적인 회사로는 후지겐(FUJIGEN)[7], Deviser 등이 있다.

공업의 경우 정보통신기기 산업의 비중이 크다. 출하액 기준 전체 공업 출하액의 43.1%, 부가가치액 기준 전체 부가가치액의 52.0%를 차지한다. 대표적으로 파나소닉, 후지전기 등이 이곳에 생산시설을 두고 있다.[8]

철도교통은 나쁘지 않은 편으로, 특급 아즈사로 신주쿠역까지 3시간 내외, 특급 시나노로 나고야역까지 3시간 내외로 소요되어 대도시까지 접근성은 나쁘지 않은 편이다. 다만 호쿠리쿠 신칸센은 윗동네인 나가노시로 지나가고, 리니어 신칸센도 마츠모토가 아닌 야마나시현 부근을 지나가는 경로로 결정되면서 시의 경쟁력 하락을 걱정하는 의견도 있는 편이다.

6. 나가노시와의 관계

마츠모토시는 나가노시와 옛날부터 사이가 좋지 않았고, 제2차 세계대전이 끝난 뒤에도 감정이 남아있어 나가노현에서 분할하는 논의도 있었으나 지금은 인구 감소 때문에 두 지자체간의 연계를 강화하고 있다. 당시 2008년에 출범된 나가노·마츠모토 정계 간담회에서 두 시장과 상공 회의소 회장과 의논할 장소를 마련했었다.

마츠모토시 출신인 사람에게 나가노 출신이냐고 물어보면 ’행정구역은 나가노현이지만 신슈 출신‘이라고 답하는 경우가 부지기수일 정도로 나가노보다는 신슈의 정체성이 강한 편이다. 나가노현으로 묶인 건 어쩔 수 없지만 그래도 마츠모토는 신슈라고 생각한다. 그래서 마츠모토 공항이 나가노 현내 유일의 공항임에도 이름이 나가노가 아니라 신슈 마츠모토 공항일 정도.

이러한 지역 감정은 축구에도 반영되었는데 마츠모토시를 연고지로 하는 마츠모토 야마가 FC와 나가노시를 연고지로 하는 AC 나가노 파르세이루의 대전을 일컫는 신슈 더비에서 서포터들의 엄청난 고조를 보이고 있다.

7. 관광

2차 세계 대전 당시 공습을 받지 않아 옛 건축물들이 잘 보존되어 있다. 국보로 지정된 마츠모토 성을 비롯해 구 카이치 학교 등 역사적인 장소가 많이 남아 있다.

매년 8월즈음 열리는 마츠모토 봉봉(松本ぼんぼん) 축제가 전국적으로 유명하다. 마츠모토 시가지에서 남녀노소 너나할것 없이 노래에 맞춰 춤을 추는 축제이다. 마츠모토역에서 반경 2km일대 전체가 축제의 장이 되며 시내의 스피커에서 노래가 흘러나올때 다 같이 춤을 추면 된다. 70년대에 시작된 축제이다.

2020년엔 개최 이래 처음으로 코로나바이러스감염증-19로 인해 개최가 취소되었다.

8. 사건사고

1994년 옴진리교에 의한 마츠모토 사린 사건이 발생하였다.
1986년 일본에서 최초로 에이즈 환자가 발생한 도시이다. 첫 확진자는 이곳에 거주하던 필리핀 여성이었으며 이 때문에 마츠모토 시민들이 타 도도부현에 갔을 때 숙박이 거부되었던 일이 있었다.[9]

9. 매체에서의 마츠모토시

신세기 에반게리온에서 세컨드 임팩트로 핵을 맞고 멸망해버린 도쿄를 대신해 일본 정부가 천도한 제2신동경시가 위치해 있는 도시이기도 하다. 2차대전 시기 일본군이 미군의 폭격을 피해 대본영을 마츠시로로 옮기는 것을 고려했던 것에서 착안해 제2신동경시가 초반에는 마츠시로에 위치한 것으로 설정되었지만, 최종적으로는 마츠모토시가 위치로 선정되었다.
