1. 개요

18세기 스웨덴의 신학자, 자연과학자[4], 철학자, 신비주의자. 원래는 기계공학자이자 해부학자, 인문학자였다. '천국과 지옥(Heaven and Hell)'이라는 사후세계에 대한 저서로 유명하다#

2. 생애

스베덴보리는 1688년 1월 29일, 스웨덴의 스톡홀름에서 차남으로 태어났다. 아버지 예스퍼 스베드보리는 루터파 궁정 성직자였으며, 웁살라 대학교 신학교수직을 맡았다가 스카라 지역의 주교가 되었다. 이런 가정환경 때문에 어린 시절부터 종교적인 것을 깊이 생각하곤 하였으나 결국 과학자의 길을 걷는다.

1699년 11살 나이에 웁살라 대학교에 입학했다. 대학에 있는 동안 인문학과 수학, 과학을 골고루 배웠으며 1709년 21살에 대학을 졸업하였다.

1710년에 네덜란드, 프랑스, 독일을 거쳐 영국 런던에 도착, 4년간 머무르다 1715년에 귀국하였다.

1744년(56세) 4월 6일, 스베덴보리는 네덜란드에 있으면서 부활절 예배를 마치고 돌아와[5] 잠자리에 들었다. 한창 잠을 자던 중 바람이 몰아치는 듯한 큰 소리가 들리자 스베덴보리는 두려움을 느꼈는데 그때 뭐라고 말할 수 없는 존재가 다가왔음을 느끼고 바닥에 얼굴을 대고 기도했다고 한다.

이듬해에도 런던에서 비슷한 신비 체험을 한 번 더 하자, 스베덴보리는 이후 열성적인 신비주의자로 돌변, 이전의 다른 과학적/인문학적인 일들에서 손을 떼고 종교적인 저작을 쓰기 시작하였다. 시간이 지나면서 스웨덴에서 스베덴보리는 뭔가 신통력이 있는 사람이란 평가를 얻으며 점차 유명해졌다. 그 외에도 스베덴보리는 귀족원의 일원으로서 정치에도 일부 참여하였다.

1759년(71세), 스베덴보리는 예테보리에서 열린 잔치에 참가했다가 갑자기 안색이 파리해졌다고 한다. 사람들이 왜 그러냐고 물어보자, 그곳에서 수백 킬로미터는 떨어진 스톡홀름에서 불이 났는데, 자기 집 근처까지 불이 미칠 수 있다고 하였다. 그러다가 얼마 뒤에 "우리집 세 번째 옆집에서 불이 잡혔다오."라고 대답하였다. 이 이야기를 전해듣고 사람들이 한 번 확인해보자, 정말로 그 시간에 스톡홀름에서 스베덴보리가 말한 대로 화재가 있었으며, 경과도 말했던 대로였다고 한다. 이 사건이 소문으로 퍼지면서 신통한 사람으로 유명해지고, 점차 관심의 대상이 되었다.

1761년, 스웨덴 국왕 아돌프 프레드리크의 왕비 루이제 울리케가 스베덴보리에 관한 소문을 듣고는 불러 자기 오빠의 소식을 듣고 싶어하였다. 루이제 왕비의 오빠는 프로이센의 왕태제 아우구스트 빌헬름(August Wilhelm)[6]이었는데 이미 1758년에 사망했다. 프로이센과 스웨덴의 사이가 나빠지자 두 사람은 서로 연락할 수 없었으나 왕비가 오빠에게 하고 싶은 말이 있어 은밀히 편지를 보냈으나 답장은 받지 못한 터였다.

다음날 스베덴보리는 왕비를 찾아가 "편지는 받았으나 당시 국정 때문에 답장을 할 수 없어서 저를 통해 소식을 전한다고 합니다."라고 말했고, 루이제 왕비는 크게 놀랐다고 한다. 이런 이야기들이 스베덴보리의 명성을 더욱 높인 것은 당연지사.

그 외에도 스베덴보리 연구자들의 자료에 따르면 스베덴보리는 감리회 창시자 존 웨슬리와 편지를 주고 받기도 했으나, 두 사람은 끝내 만나지 못하였다고 한다. 여기에 대해서 존 웨슬리가 한때 스베덴보리의 글을 읽고 흥미를 가졌으나, 좀 더 알아본 뒤에는 매우 혹평하며 관계를 끊었는데, 스웨덴보리 팬보이들이 왜곡했다는 주장도 있다. 존 웨슬리의 신학적 입장에 따르면 스베덴보리의 주장은 매우 허황되이 느꼈을 것은 의심할 여지가 없다.

1772년 3월 29일, 영국 런던에서 머물다가 숨을 거두었다. 죽기 약 1년 전 스베덴보리는 자기가 죽을 날짜와 시간을 편지를 통해 한 목사에 전했다고 한다 . 사람들은 시신을 런던에 있는 스웨덴 교회 뜰에 묻었지만, 1908년에 스웨덴 정부가 묘소를 웁살라 대성당으로 이장하였다.

3. 영향과 새교회

스베덴보리는 삼위일체에 대한 전통적인 해석에 반대하고 새로운 해석을 내놓아 지금도 논란이 되고 있다. 사후에 영국에서 그의 교리를 따르는 '새 그리스도 교회'(Church of the New Christ)가 설립되었다. 미국[7]과 영국에는 꽤 널리 퍼져 있다고 하는데[8], 사실 국내에도 '새 예루살렘교 총회'라는 이름으로 정식 교단이 들어왔다. 신자 수는 전국에 200~300명 수준으로 추정된다. 새교회, 새 그리스도 교회, 새 예루살렘 교회 뭐라고 불러도 무방하다.

다만 이 교단을 개신교의 일파로 봐야 할지는 논쟁의 여지가 있다. 삼위일체를 사실상 부정[9]하고 스베덴보리의 신학 저술을 '성문서'라 칭하며 성경과 동일한 권위를 가진 경전으로 수용하고 있기 때문이다. 가톨릭교회의 성전승을 부인하는 기독교파니까 개신교 아님? 이라고 하면 할 말은 없지만...[10]

교회 건물이나 안에 있는 집기들은 의외로 평범한데, 북유럽에서 유래한 교파답게 루터교와 비슷한 인테리어라고 생각하면 틀리지 않다. 미국에서는 캘리포니아에 있는 스베덴보리 교회와 웨이페어러 채플 교회가 유명하다. 후자는 사실상 예식장이나 마찬가지이지만. 사실상 중심지는 미국 펜실베이니아주 브린아신 주교좌성당(Bryn Athyn Cathedral)이다.

목회자의 복장 역시 루터교 영향을 받아 장백의에 영대를 착용한다. 다만 전례력을 인정하지 않는지라 영대의 색깔은 절기가 아닌 목사 계급에 따라 나뉜다. 성직(정식 명칭은 사제직, priesthood) 서열은 주교(한국 새교회에서는 왜인지 '비숍'이라고 한다) -> 1급 목사 -> 2급 목사 순서이며, 주교는 빨간 영대를 매고, 1급은 하얀 영대, 2급은 파란 영대다.

어쨌든 교리 면에서는 (어디까지나 기존 기독교 관점에서) 명백한 이단이긴 한데 신기하게도 타 종교에 매우 열린 입장을 취하고 있다. 모든 보편종교가 하나님의 계시와 말씀의 입류를 받았으며 그렇기 때문에 전부 진리를 포함하고 있다는 견해이기 때문이다(물론 가장 완전한 계시는 성경과 성문서에 적혀 있다는 입장이지만). 또 천국과 지옥은 믿는 종교의 이름이 아니라 영혼의 상태(이는 지상에서 선하게 살았냐 악하게 살았냐에 따라 결정됨)에 의해 판가름난다는 점에서 꼭 기독교를 신앙하지 않아도(심지어 무종교인이어도) 구원의 기회가 부여된다는 것이 공식적인 교리다.

적어도 아브라함 계통 종교 중에서는 타 종교에 가장 개방적인 종파로 생각된다. 실제 새교회 교인들도 타 종교의 교리와 전통을 학습하고 수용하는 데 거리낌이 없는 편이다.

앞에서도 말했듯 이단은 맞지만 사이비 종교라고 하기엔 무리가 있다. 보통 사이비 창시자들은 본인이 계시를 받았다거나 신적 존재라고 주장하면서 자신을 추앙하는 단체를 개설하여 후원금을 모으는 것이 일반적이다. 반면 스베덴보리는 자기가 계시를 받았다고 주장하긴 했는데 이걸 가지고 금전적 영리를 추구하지는 않았다. 기껏해야 책만 좀 팔았을 뿐. 그리고 사상 자체가 종교다원주의에 가까워 신봉자들이 폭동을 일으키거나 물리적 갈등을 유발한 사례도 보고되지 않았다.

사실 스베덴보리가 생전에나 지금에나 영매사 내지는 영능력자로 알려져 있다. 하지만 막상 이 사람의 저술들을 읽어보면 자기가 받은 계시 얘기보다는 본인의 독창적인 조직신학 체계에 대한 내용이 대부분이다. 생전에도 영매사 취급을 받는 걸 상당히 싫어했는데[11] 현대에 그의 추종자를 자처하는 사람들마저도 대체로 그의 신학보다는 영능력(?)에 관심을 갖는 경우가 많다...

임마누엘 칸트는 스베덴보리에 대한 저술 『시령자의 꿈』을 익명으로 출간했다. 이 저술은 칸트의 비판철학의 요소들이 선취되었다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

[1] 스베덴보리의 생년월일은 그레고리력을 따라 표기하였다. 스베덴보리가 태어나던 무렵 스웨덴에서는 율리우스력을 사용했는데, 율리우스력으로는 1월 29일이라 이렇게 쓴 자료들도 있다. 이 무렵 유럽의 개신교권 국가에서는 율리우스력에서 그레고리력으로 넘어가는 과도기였으므로, 여기서는 그레고리력으로 날짜를 통일하여 쓴다.[2] Jesper Swedberg. 이후에 여왕이 귀족 작위를 하사하여 성을 바꾸었다. 스웨덴 국교회 주교였다.[3] 일단 스베덴보리 본인은 새로운 교파를 설립한 적도 없고 조국의 국교회를 떠난 적도 없다. 다만 본인 사후에 그의 신학 저술을 '성문서'로 간주하는 새 교파가 설립되었다. 자세한 것은 후술.[4] 참고로, 스베덴보리는 오늘날 주류 천문학계로부터 널리 인정받고 있는 태양계 형성 이론의 최초 고안자 두 명 중의 한 사람이다. 나머지 한 사람은 놀랍게도 순수이성비판의 저자로 유명한 철학자 임마누엘 칸트다.[5] 1744년 부활절은 4월 5일 일요일이다. 4월 6일은 월요일인데 왜 자료들에서 이날 스베덴보리가 부활절 예배를 보고 돌아왔다고 하는지 알 수 없으므로 고증이 필요하다. 어쩌면 4월 5일 24시를 넘기고 집에 들어와서 그렇게 표현했을 수도 있다.[6] 프리드리히 대왕의 뒤를 이은 프리드리히 빌헬름 2세의 아버지.[7] 헬렌 켈러가 이 교회 신자였다(자서전 '나는 신비주의자입니다'에서 언급).[8] 이것도 요즘은 사실이 아니다. 물론 한국보다야 신자가 많긴 하지만 특유의 다원주의적 교리 때문에 별 매력이 없는 관계로 상당히 규모가 줄어들었다.[9] 거칠게 요약하면 성부는 하나님의 신성, 성자는 하나님의 인성을 의미하고, 성령은 하나님의 활동과 영향력을 의미한다고 해석(?)한다. 그러니까 예수 그리스도는 아버지 하나님이 육신을 취한 형태라는 것. 이렇게 해석하면 문제가 되는 게 성경에서는 분명 성부, 성자, 성령을 독립된 개체로 묘사한다는 것이다. 당장 예수가 성부 하나님에게 기도를 여러 번 하고(부르짖기도 하고) 성령에 대해서는 '또다른 보혜사', 즉 성부와 자신(성자)하고는 별개의 존재라고 언급한다. 스베덴보리 신학에서는 이 모순을 타파하기 위해 예수가 하나님으로서의 정체성과 인간으로서의 정체성을 왔다갔다했다고 본다. 자세한 것은 책을 직접 읽어봐야...[10] 그게 개신교의 기준이라면 예수 그리스도 후기 성도 교회나 여호와의 증인도 개신교가 된다...[11] 본인은 학자로서의 정체성이 강했다. 실제 그의 저서들을 읽어보면 종교 서적치고는 상당히 논리적이고 체계적이라는 점을 볼 수 있다. 또 계시 주장 이후에도 스웨덴 상원의원을 지내면서 경제 관련 입법활동도 멀쩡히 한 것을 보면(금본위제 실시 법안을 작성, 입안했다) 무당이 신병 받는 것마냥 정신질환에 빠졌다고 보기도 힘들다. 다만 주변 친구들이나 지인들로부터는 비웃음을 좀 사긴 했다.
