1. 개요

XPEnology는 시놀로지 NAS에서 사용 중인 운영체제인 DSM(Disk Station Manager)을 일반 시스템에서도 사용할 수 있게 포팅한 것이다.

한국에서는 주로 저가형 나스 (속칭 타오나스[1])에 사용되었다.

대한민국에서는 해킨토시의 인식이 이어져 해놀로지로 부른다.[2]

2. 사용하는 이유

오픈소스계의 NAS OS인 OpenMediaVault, 또는 리눅스 서버용 배포판 등은 설치 난이도부터 웹서버 개설 난이도까지 매우 어렵고 안정성도 불안정하지만, 시놀로지는 리눅스 구조, sudo를 몰라도 NAS의 기능을 쓸 수 있는 쉬운 UI, 그리고 강력한 보안, 업데이트 안정성이라는 강점을 내세워 파일 저장공간부터 사진, 영상 클라우드, 웹서버, VM까지 이런 설정을 비교적 쉽게 해 주기 때문인데, 시놀로지 DSM을 구동하기 위한 시놀로지 하드웨어가 같은 사양 기준, 다른 NAS 하드웨어보다 너무 비싸기 때문이다.

게다가 이런 100만원 가까이 비싸게 주고 사고 RAM까지 풀옵션으로 조립하여 현대 NAS 사양으로도 손색 없는 시놀로지 하드웨어가 10년이 지나면 OS 업데이트 대상에서 지원이 중단되어 버리지만, 이런 구형 시놀로지 하드웨어는 XPEnology나 다른 OS도 설치할 수 없도록, 타 OS나 최신 DSM 버전 우회 설치 시도 시 망가져 부팅이 되지 않도록 계획적 구식화 설계까지 해 놓은 기기이다. 반면, 비정품 NAS의 XPEnology는 OS 업데이트 지원 중단을 당하면 다른 부트로더로 바꿔 새 하드웨어처럼 계속 쓸 수 있다.

3. 합법인가?

XPEnology는 GPL 라이선스를 따르는 시스템 파일과 컴파일된 CGI를 결합하여 만든 소프트웨어다. 여기서 문제가 되는 부분은 패키지의 CGI를 저작권자의 허락없이 수정(패치)한 CGI 파일이다. 시놀로지 소프트웨어 약관[3] 위반이며 저작권법 위반가능성이 있다.

회색지대이긴 한데 가장 관련 있는 것은 CGI 모듈의 저작권 침해와 리버스 엔지니어링 여부일 것이다. 리버스 엔지니어링 금지는 저작권법 101조 4에서 규정하며 아마도 다음 1항의 불가피성 여부가 다툼의 핵심인데 시놀로지 하드웨어를 구입한 정당한 사용자가 호환을 위해 역분석을 진행할 수는 있지만, 2항에 의거하면 공중 배포 또는 전송은 불법이다. (제3자에게 제공하는 경우)
저작권법 제101조의4(프로그램코드역분석)
① 정당한 권한에 의하여 프로그램을 이용하는 자 또는 그의 허락을 받은 자는 호환에 필요한 정보를 쉽게 얻을 수 없고 그 획득이 불가피한 경우에는 해당 프로그램의 호환에 필요한 부분에 한하여 프로그램의 저작재산권자의 허락을 받지 아니하고 프로그램코드역분석을 할 수 있다.
② 제1항에 따른 프로그램코드역분석을 통하여 얻은 정보는 다음 각 호의 어느 하나에 해당하는 경우에는 이를 이용할 수 없다.
1. 호환 목적 외의 다른 목적을 위하여 이용하거나 제3자에게 제공하는 경우
1. 프로그램코드역분석의 대상이 되는 프로그램과 표현이 실질적으로 유사한 프로그램을 개발ㆍ제작ㆍ판매하거나 그 밖에 프로그램의 저작권을 침해하는 행위에 이용하는 경우.

시놀로지 프랑스는 불법이라 주장하고 있다. 간혹 리눅스의 라이선스인 GPL의 전염 조항에 따라 소스 공개 의무가 있다고 주장 하는 사람들이 있지만 리눅스의 GPL 라이선스는 커널을 제외한 소프트웨어는 별도로 GPL 라이선스의 소프트웨어를 섞지 않는 이상 GPL에 해당되지 않는다. 이 경우 시놀로지는 리눅스 커널과 그 관련된 소프트웨어의 소스 코드 공개 의무가 있지만 별도의 독립적인 소프트웨어는 공개 의무에서 제외된다. 자세한 내용은 GPL문서 참조.

하지만 시놀로지 본사에서는 몇 년째 방관하고 있고 개인에게 법적 대응한 적도 없다. 한국 IT 사이트인 2CPU에서 시놀로지 한국 판매사와 Xpenology 관련 문제가 있었는데, 사이트 운영자가 직접 Synology 본사에 문의를 한 결과 커뮤니티에 법적 대응을 할 이유가 없다는 답변(개인을 고소하지 않는다는 언급은 없으므로 주의)을 받았다. # 개인 용도에서는 거의 문제가 없을 것이다. 하지만, 직장에서 사용하거나 상용 서비스의 일부로 사용할 때는 Xpenology 사용의 법적 리스크를 감안하고 써야 한다. 또 방관한다고 저작권이 사라지는 것이 아니므로 언제든지 고발 가능하다.

4. 부트로더

  • 모델명을 고를 수 있는데, 자신의 하드디스크 수, CPU 세대에 알맞은 모델명 및 부트로더를 사용하자.
  • 접속이 잘 되는지 실시간으로 확인을 위해, 무한 ping 명령어를 켜 놓자.
    • Windows : ping 192.168.0.xx -t
    • Linux : ping 192.168.0.xx
  • DSM 버전이 바뀜에 따라, 부트로더 해킹이 막히고, 이에 따라 부트로더도 세대가 교체되어 창과 방패 전쟁이 일어나고 있다.
  • 해당 모델의 DSM 펌웨어 .pat 파일의 모든 버전을 다운받아 놓고, 가장 오래된 버전부터 차례대로 .pat 수동 업데이트를 진행하며 테스트하며 자신의 기기에 맞는 부트로더를 찾는다.
  • DSM 업데이트 중, 무한 ping을 쏴 주면, OS부팅 처리로 인해 ping 지연 시간이 크게 튀는 구간이 나온다. 그 때 브라우저 새로고침을 누르면 더 빠르게 진입이 가능하다.
  • 내장 랜카드는 리얼텍은 호환 불량(작동불능 또는 속도저하현상)이 잦고 대신 인텔이 호환성이 좋다. 메인보드를 잘 살펴보고 구매하자.

ARC Loader보다 부팅 및 로더 빌드가 느리지만, 돌연사가 적고 안정적인 편이다.

5. 주의

Xpenology를 의식한 행보인지 DSM 6.0부터 GPL 소스 오픈이 상당히 늦어지고 있으므로,[4] 장기적으로 봤을 때 Xpenology의 앞길은 그다지 밝지 않다.

Xpenology를 이용하게 되면 정품 시놀로지에서 가능하지만 Xpenology에서는 사용할 수 없는 기능들이 있다.
  • 처음 시놀로지 설정 시 디스크 전체 포맷을 요구하며, 거부 시 진행이 막힌다. 데이터 유실이 걱정된다면 디스크 내의 파일들을 다른 디스크로 옮기고, OS 파티션이 있는 드라이브라면 클론질라로 다른 디스크에 이미지로 백업을 해 놓자. 데스크탑의 경우, 작동시키기 직전 테스트 과정으로, 한 개의 하드디스크만을 남기고 SATA 선을 빼 버리자.
  • 'Synology Moments'에서 썸네일이 생성된후 썸네일이 회색 바탕에 느낌표로 나타나거나 'Photo Station'에서도 썸네일이 나오지 않는다.
    • PhotoPrism(무료/오픈소스) 등의 대안을 사용해 보자.
  • 'Video Station'패키지에서는 실시간 트랜스코딩이 되지 않는 문제.
    • Jellyfin(무료/오픈소스) 등의 대안을 사용해 보자.
  • XPEnology에 OTP을 건 상태에서 OTP 장치가 분실될 경우 아예 XPEnology를 처음부터 다시 구축하는 것 말고는 OTP을 강제 해제하는 방법이 없다는 문제[5]
  • 정품 시놀로지에서 사용가능한 QuickConnect, .synology.me 등 도메인을 사용할 수 없다. 이 경우는 정품 시리얼을 구하여 부트로더를 수정하는 식으로 사용할 수 있으나, 같은 시리얼 2개로 동시에 접속하게 된다면 이른바 '시리얼 밴'을 먹을수 있는 답이 없는 상황이 나타날 수 있다. 물론 중국에서 어둠에 루트를 이용하여 시리얼을 구할 수는 있으나 이 또한 언제 막힐지 모르는 시리얼이기에 추천하는 방법은 아니다.
    • 차라리 IPTIME등의 제조사에서 제공하는 공유기 자체 DDNS 서비스, 또는 duckdns.org를 사용하는 게 속 편하다.
    • 그러나, Let's Encrypt 인증서 갱신에는 시놀로지 도메인만 와일드카드 일괄 인증을 지원한다.
  • 우리가 흔히 쓰는 윈도우는 크랙을 사용해도 부트로더를 전혀 건드리지 않지만, XPEnology는 부팅에 중요한 부분인 부트로더를 크래킹하여 작동시키는 행위이기 때문에 특정 버전으로의 업데이트 과정에서 커널 미스매치나, 시놀로지 사에서 의도하고 막아버리거나 하여 부트로더가 갑자기 망가져 부팅이 되지 않을 수 있다.
  • CPU 모델, 랜카드 모델에 따라 DSM 업데이트까지 순조롭게 되는가, 아니면 켜지지도 않는가 차이가 엄청나다.
  • 중요한 자료나 시간을 버리고 싶지 않으면 정품 시놀로지를 사용하자. 한 부트로더가 되지 않는다고 아무 부트로더나 함부로 받다가 백도어에 당하여 개인정보가 새어 버릴 수 있다는 것도 조심하자.

6. 여담

시놀로지 NAS의 성능에 만족하지 않아 해놀로지로 갈거라면 차라리 고성능 스토리지 서버 세트를 장만하는 걸 추천한다.(주로 HP의 HPE 프로라이언트 모델을 추천하는데, 다른 브랜드도 상관이 없다. 돌고 돌아 시놀로지 정품 구입.) 아니면, 일반 PC에 리눅스나 윈도우 서버를 깔아 쓰는 것도 나쁘지 않다. 그리고 그런용도로 쓰라고 TrueNAS라는게 존재한다.

[1] 2019년 암호화폐 채굴기였던 기기를 NAS로 개조하여 타오바오에 떨어 판 타오바오발 나스. 지금은 알리익스프레스에서도 가끔 보인다.[2] 일부 중년층 커뮤니티 등지에서는 XPEnology(스페놀로지)와 해놀로지를 '헤'놀로지라고 헷갈린 것이 고착화된 탓에 헤놀로지로 부르는 경우도 있다.[3] 최종 사용자 라이선스 계약 내용 중 허가된 제품에만 설치하도록 명시되어 있다. 이는 해킨토시 사례도 마찬가지로 매킨토시는 애플의 하드웨어에만 설치가 허가되기 때문에 약관 위반이 된다.[4] 아니면 DSM가 LGPL, BSD 등으로 라이선스가 전환되어 아예 소스를 공개할 이유가 없어진 것인지도 모르는 일이다.[5] 참고로 정품(리얼) 시놀로지 NAS에서는 후면에 있는 리셋 버튼을 핀으로 눌러 NAS 설정을 초기화(데이터는 보존) 할 수 있다.
