1. 소개

대한민국의 친형제 힙합 듀오 프리스타일의 2004년 7월 13일 발표된 노래. 프리스타일 멤버 미노가 작사했으며, 지오가 작곡과 편곡을 담당했다.

기타는 메인은 지오가 직접 쳤으나 당시 기타를 막 배우던 시기라 복잡한 연주를 할 수 없어 일부분은 함춘호가 쳐줬다고 한다.# 피처링한 여성 보컬은 정희경이다.

2. 상세

싸이월드 미니홈피 BGM의 대명사. 당시 전국민적 인기를 끌던 싸이월드의 미니홈피 대표 BGM으로 엄청난 인기를 자랑했다. 지금까지도 당시 미니홈피에 엄청난 시간과 도토리를 투자한 20~40대 사이에서 '싸이월드 감성' 하면 대표적으로 손꼽히는 노래다.[1]

정작 프리스타일 3집의 타이틀곡은 한소리가 피쳐링한 '남자들의 세계'였지만, 전혀 홍보하지 않았던 수록곡 Y가 입소문과 싸이월드 미니홈피 BGM으로 대인기를 끌면서 크게 성공하면서 프리스타일은 하루에 행사를 2번 뛸 정도로 재정적으로 성공하게 되었고 음악 생활을 이어갈 수 있었다. 이로써 명성이 높아져 지상파에도 자주 등장하고 중국 시장에도 진출해서 돈을 꽤 벌었다고 한다.

곡의 MV에는 배우 이주현과 리포터 전제향이 출연했다. 명곡인 것과 별개로 저예산인데다 타이틀곡도 아니었기 때문에 뮤직비디오의[2] 퀄리티가 영 좋지 않다. 'PPT로 만들었냐'는 글이 베스트 댓글로 있을 정도다.

만들 당시 에피소드를 보면 1집과 2집이 그리 흥행하지 않아 지인에게 무료로 빌린 고장난 보일러실에서 밥을 굶어가며 만들었다고한다. 너무 배고파서 울면서 잠들었는데 자기 직전 만들어 연주한 반주를 다음날 들어보니 생각보다 그럴듯해 만들어지게 되었다고 한다.

이런 에피소드가 있음에도 미노와 지오는 Y라는 곡을 그렇게 좋아하지 않았다고 한다. 힙합 그룹이 사랑 타령하며 노래를 부른다는건 자존심이 상했다고... 심지어 피처링을 맡은 정희경조차 자신의 음악과 맞지 않다고 생각해서 싫어했고 활동도 거부했다고 한다.[3] 지금과 다르게 2000년대 극 초반 한국 힙합계에서는 에픽하이의 성공 이전까지 이런 류의 가벼운 음악을 배척했다고... # 하지만 3집을 마지막으로 생각하고 있었고 이쯤 되면 이런 가벼운 노래 한 곡정도는 있어도 좋겠다는 생각에 엘범에 수록하게 됐다고 한다.

그리 큰 기대를 안 했기 때문에 녹음 역시 정희경과 함춘호 모두 연습 한 번 안하고 원큐에 끝냈다고 한다. 정희경의 허밍과 노래 첫자락에 함춘호의 기타 솔로는 모두 애드립이였다고 한다.

해당 곡은 피처링인 정희경이 활동을 거부했기 때문에 방송에서는 서후[4]와 같이 활동을 했기 때문에 서후가 피쳐링한 것으로 잘못 알려져 있었다. 정희경은 현재 미술 전시 기획자이자 뮤지션으로 활동하고 있다. 아이돌 보컬 트레이너와 영어강사로 활동했다는 소문도 있었으나 본인이 자신의 블로그에서 그런 일을 한 적이 없다고 직접 밝혔다.[5]

투유 프로젝트 - 슈가맨 3 7회에서 재석팀의 슈가송으로 나오며 15년 만에 처음으로 완전체 무대를 보여주었다.[7]

정희경은 그 동안 이 노래를 왜 기피했는지에 대한 사연을 설명했는데, 정희경이 선호하는 음악과 달라 함께 무대에 서는 것을 피했다고 한다. 처음 이 사연을 밝혔을 때에는 다들 '그렇다고 피하기까지야...'라는 눈치였는데, 정희경의 솔로 무대를 본 후에는 미노도 농담 반 진담 반으로 "제가 잘못했네요."라고 밝힐 정도로 추구하는 음악의 방향이 완전히 다르다는 것을 모든 사람들이 수긍했다.영상[8]

하지만 정희경은 모 스노보드 선수가 이 노래만 듣고 연습에 매진한다는 사연과 슈가맨 양준일 편을 본 이후[9] 이 노래에 대한 반감을 거두었다고 한다.영상

7. 리메이크

인기가 있었던 곡인만큼 리메이크도 제법 됐는데, 먼저 원곡자인 프리스타일부터 세 번이나 재탕했다. 2006년 싱글에서 한 번, 2007년 정규 5집에서 Melosoul remix 버전으로 두 번, 2015년 레게 버전 리믹스 싱글로 세 번.

2016년에는 러블리즈의 Kei와 면도에 의해 계범주가 피쳐링으로 참여한 버전으로 리메이크되기도 했다.[10]

일본의 世理奈(세리나)가 피처링한 일본어 버전도 있다.

2020년 슈가맨에 나왔을 땐 권진아&서동현이 이 곡을 리메이크했는데, 랩의 비중이 많았던 원곡의 방향성을 뒤집아 보컬을 메인으로 하고 랩을 피쳐링하는 방향으로 탈바꿈했다. 그리고 이 곡으로 이기게 되었다.[11]

8. 표절 피해

8.1. 1차: 대만



2005년 대만의 반위백(潘瑋柏)[12]이 부득불애(不得不愛)라는 곡명으로 번안곡을 허락없이 발표했다. 번안곡은 상을 받을 정도로 대히트를 했고, 이 때문에 중화권에서는 아직도 이 노래가 반위백의 노래로 알고 있는 사람들이 많다.

프리스타일의 소속사가 대만 법원에 소송을 제기하였으나 대만 법원은 국교를 끊은 한국의 저작권을 인정하지 않았기 때문에 1심에서 기각되었다. 원곡 가수 프리스타일은 분통이 터질 노릇. 대만에서 피해 보상을 받지 못했지만, 대신 중국에서 원곡 가수로 널리 알려져서 중국 행사를 뛰면서 나오는 행사비가 꽤 짭짤하다고 한다.

8.2. 2차: 멕시코


얼마전까지는 2014년에 멕시코의 가수 Phantom Joyce가 무단으로 발매한 표절곡 'Tus Te Quiero'가 유튜브에서 저작권을 행사하고 있었으나 현재는 벅스측에서 권리를 되찾은 것으로 보인다.

8.3. 3차: 일본


2020년에는 일본 래퍼 BADSAIKUSH의 'Outlaw'가 이 노래를 표절했다. 이에 대해 해당 래퍼는 인스타그램을 비공개한 후 샘플링이라 주장했으나#, 정작 일본 내에서도 비판하는 반응이 나왔다. 이 영향으로 일본 내에서도 노래가 유명해졌는지 Y 뮤직비디오 댓글창에 일본어 댓글이 꽤 보인다.

10. 여담

  • 정희경이 슈가맨에 출연하면서 가진 인터뷰로 인해 '정희경이 Y를 싫어했다'라고 알려졌는데, 사실은 "왜 활동을 안 했냐?"라고 주위 사람들이 질문할때 즉각적으로 둘러댄 답변에 가깝다고 한다. 자신은 피처링을 한 것뿐이니 당연히 이 노래의 흥행에 대한 공로는 온전히 프리스타일의 몫이라 판단했기 때문이며, 자신은 자신의 음악 영역에서 활동을 이어갔다고 한다.[13] 2021년 10월 인터뷰 영상
