2. 상세
Diamond Dogs 투어 도중에 작곡을 시작했다. 소울 음악에 대한 그의 집착이 드러난 앨범이기도 하다. 이전 앨범부터 소울 음악에 대한 관심이 일부 드러나긴 했으나 본격적으로 드러낸 것은 이 앨범이 처음이다. 보위는 자신의 이전 음악적 영향을 떨쳐내고 '로컬 댄스 홀'에서 들을 법한 음악을 추구했다. 흑인 음악의 큰 영향으로 인해 보위는 앨범을 설명하는 데 있어서 '플라스틱 소울'이라는 단어를 사용하기도 했다. 보위는 이 앨범과 직전의 투어를 통해 여자친구이자 후배 가수인 Astronettes의 아바 체리의 실력을 향상시켰고, 흑인음악 리듬 기타리스트 카를로스 알로마, 70년대 후반의 리듬 트랙을 함께 맡아줄 재즈 드러머 데니스 데이비스[1], 당시 배킹 보컬이었던 소울 음악인 루서 밴드로스, 천재적인 색소포니아 데이비드 샌본을 발굴하였다.
2.1. 길었던 작업기
앨범은 보위가 프로듀싱을 도와주려던 흑인 음악 그룹 The Astronettes의 멤버들을 필두로, 다이아몬드 독스 투어 휴식기부터 작업되기 시작해 모타운의 스튜디오와 유사한 설비를 차려놓은 시그마 스튜디오에서 세-네번의 스튜디오 세션과 여러 단계의 믹스를 거치고서 해를 넘긴 1975년에야 작업이 완료되었으며, 이 과정에서 상당히 많은 곡들이 탈락되어 미공개곡으로 남게 되었다. 심지어 최종 수록 목록에 포함될 거라고 예상해 투어에 들고 갔던 곡마저도 앨범 내에서 삭제되어 투어에서 그만 연주하게 되는 경우도 있었다. 데이비드 보위/공연 문서에서 <It's Gonna Be Me>를 참조.앨범의 제목 역시 특정 수록곡과 전체적인 앨범의 의지를 묶어내는 제목 사이에서 계속 갈등하다가[2] 결국 1번 트랙인 <Young Americans>로 결정되는 등 여러 우여곡절이 있었다.
이후 탈락곡들은 1990년 Rykodisc 사에서 재판한 Young Americans CD와 2007년 Young Americans 특집 박스셋에서 일부 공개되었다. 2016년 <Who Can I Be Now?> 박스셋에서는 아예 탈락곡을 박스셋 제목으로 걸고, 이 시기 세션들 중 발매 직전까지 갔던 후보 중 한 묶음을 <The Gouster> 라는 제목으로 별도 발매하였다. Young Americans 앨범에 최종수록된 곡들은 대부분 현악 편곡이 생략되어 있으며 조금 더 믹스가 단단하다. 정작 <The Gouster> 라는 가제를 가졌던 곡 <I Am A Lazer> 는 이 박스셋에서 발매되지 않았으며 팬들 사이에 암암리에 부틀렉으로만 떠돌고 있다. * 표시는 앨범에 이미 수록된 곡.

- 첫 번째로 싱글컷된 곡. 보위식 백인 소울의 진수를 보여준다. 워터게이트 사건 전후 작곡된 곡이라 가사에 닉슨이 등장.
- 1990년 인터뷰에 따르면 보위는 80년대 후반부터 이 곡을 싫어했다. 아웃사이드 투어 이후의 연주자들이 보위와의 유대가 강해 리허설에서 가끔 연주자들끼리 준비한 보위의 예전 곡을 장난삼아 연주하면 보위가 웃으며 끼어들었고 어떤 때는 셋리스트에 추가되기까지 했는데, 이 곡만은 "미안하지만, 지금은 아니야(Not Now)"라며 아예 리허설에서부터 연주 자체를 제지했다고.

- 보위 본인이 좋아했던 "초인" 모티프를 연애적 로맨스에 맞춰 풀어낸 가벼운 곡이다. 이 곡의 제목이 앨범 제목의 초안 중 하나이기도 했다.
- 이 곡이 처음으로 공개되던 라이브에서 보위 인생의 최고음이 나왔다. 프레디 머큐리의 역대 최고음보다 딱 온음 낮은 4옥타브 레(D6)[13]. 배킹 보컬이라고 생각할 수도 있지만 맥락과 현장 증언을 조합했을 때 보위가 낸 음이 맞다.

- Fame의 리프는 사실 카를로스 알로마가 정통 소울 곡인 "Footstompin" 을 Young Americans 앨범에 커버곡으로 싣기 위해 합주를 하며 만들어낸 리프로부터 왔다. 다만 왼쪽의 원곡을 들어보면 원곡에는 저 리프가 없기 때문에 당연히 표절은 아니다. Young Americans 발매 이전 Diamond Dogs 투어의 극후반 파트인 Soul 투어에서 이 곡을 계속 연주했고, 원래 마지막까지도 Footstompin을 커버해서 앨범에 실으려던 걸 녹음이 잘 되지 않아 쉬던 중에 레논이 가세하며 아예 다른 곡으로 만들어지게 된 것.
