1. 개요

일본 창작물에서 어린 여자아이를 가리키는 속어. 어린 남자아이는 쇼타라고 부른다.

'어리다'의 기준은 애매하지만 대체로 외모 기준 초등학생 정도이다. 그 이하의 나이(0~6세)는 Infantophilia로 정리한다. 중학생 정도 외모까지도 포함된다. 그 이상은 아주 드물다. 창작물에는 '실제 나이는 많지만 행동은 어린' 예도 있다.

2. 유래

롤리타 콤플렉스(Lolita Complex)의 일본식 표기인 로리콘(ロリータコンプレックス)에서 따온 말이다. 유래가 된 롤리타 콤플렉스는 '롤리콤', '롤리컴' 식으로 쓸 때가 있지만 이 단어는 '롤리'라고 할 때가 거의 없다. 원래는 유래를 따라 여아에게 성적 매력과 성욕을 느끼는 소아성애적 의미를 띠고 있었지만, 오늘날에 들어 그런 의미[1]는 약해졌다.

한편 서양권에서는 보통 '로리'라고 하면 십중팔구는 선정적으로 묘사되는 여자아이라고 보는 경향이 여전하므로 표현에 주의할 것.

3D 매체나 인터넷 상에서는 '로린이'(로리타+어린이)라는 말을 쓸 때도 있다.
외모는 어리지만 설정상 나이가 많아 말투와 행동이 고풍스러운 캐릭터는 '로리할매(ロリババア)'라고 부른다.
한참 자주 쓰이던 시대에는 '누님'과 맞대응 관계였다. 건담 시리즈의 지온 vs 연방에 빗대어 '로리지온' - '누님연방' 식의 표현도 종종 보였다.
일본의 서브컬처에서는 20세기 말에 미성년 여성을 지칭하는 은어로 레몬이란 단어를 사용했다. 당시 작품이나 단체에 레몬이란 단어가 들어가면 미성년 여성을 성적 대상으로 삼는 창작물/창작 집단이란 의미로 통했다. 이 '미성년'의 범위가 위로는 고등학생이지만 밑으로는 초등학생, 유치원생까지 포함했다. 21세기에 들어서는 거의 쓰이지 않게 되었는데, 20세기에 나름 유명세를 떨쳤던 작품이나 단체들(크림레몬 시리즈, 레몬 피플 등)에서 그 흔적을 찾아볼 수 있을 뿐이다.
레몬을 이 의미로 쓰는 이유가 좀 충격적인데, 나이가 어린 여성은 신체 부위에서 레몬처럼 톡 쏘는 냄새가 난다는 이유에서 만들어진 은어다.

오타쿠 계열 작품에서는 로리라고는 하지만 체형만 작을 뿐 골반이나 유방, 엉덩이 등 몸매에 여성적인 매력이 조금씩 드러나게 그리는 일이 많다. 여아들은 초등학교 고학년 즈음에 2차 성징이 시작되는 것이 보통이기는 하지만 실제로는 남아와 구별되기 시작하는 정도지 여성적인 매력이 나타나는 시기는 아니다. 특히 아동기에는 젖살 때문에 아무리 꾸며도 어른의 관점에서 예쁘고 잘생겨보이기 힘들지만 오타쿠 작품에서는 그림체 특성상 잘 구분되지 않는다. 때문에 오타쿠들이 열광하는 로리 캐릭터들은 사실상 키작은 동안 어른이고 로리콘들은 대두 성애자일 뿐이라는 비아냥도 있다.

이는 이유가 있는데, 정말 현실적으로 어린 여자아이는 오타쿠 입장에서 별로이기 때문이다. 즉, 상업적으로도 현실적인 묘사를 할 이유가 없거니와 위험 부담만 더 커지니 그렇게 할 이유가 없는 것이다. 이를테면 서브컬처 게임에서 로리 캐릭터 일러스트가 고증을 살려 정말로 통짜 허리에 가로배꼽으로 그려지면 진짜 페도같다거나 남자애 같다면서 호불호가 갈리기 시작한다. 물론 태너 척도나 아동 해부학 고증을 조사하는 등 심연으로 빠진 작가들도 있기는 하다.#

에로게 회사는 합법 로리를 제외하고 로리물을 만드는 것을 암묵적으로 지양하는 편이라고 한다. 그러나 만들 사람은 만든다고 사립 사쿠란보 소학교라는 동인단체가 로리물 게임으로 유명하다.

실제로도 오타쿠 업계에서는 키작고 동안이기만 하면 설정상 나이가 고등학생~성인에 성숙한 몸매를 지닌 캐릭터라고 해도 '로리'라고 칭하는 일이 많다. 로리거유같은 모순형용이 존재하는 것도 이 때문이다. 이런 조합이 극단화된 캐릭터들은 숏스택 취향과도 어느정도 통한다.

5. 기타

인터넷 상에서 제목을 로@리로 적어 놓고, 정작 내용은 로리라는 이름 혹은 성을 가진 인물의 사진을 올리는 유행이 있었다. 대표적으로 브로리와 포로리, 조로리와 탱크로리를 든 DIO가 일본 애니 속 4대 로리라는 낚시 제목으로 위세를 떨치기도 했다. 영국의 배우 휴 로리와 스타크래프트 2의 로리 스완과 넷플릭스 오리지널 드라마 더 글로리, 브뢴스테드-로리 역시 유명한 낚시 소재.
반대로 역이용해서 모닝글로리라며 아침에 로리 일러스트를 올리는 일도 있다.
