1. 개요

멕시코 남동부에 있는 자치주.

2. 역사

멕시코 독립 직후에는 게레로주 일부와 베라크루스 주 일부까지 포함하였다고 한다. 태평양과 멕시코 만을 가로지르는 유일한 주였다.

3. 자연환경

서쪽 끝에는 이스타시와틀과 포포카테페틀 화산이 있으며, 멕시코주와 경계를 이루고 있다.
동쪽 끝에 멕시코 최고봉인 시틀랄테페틀 (Citlaltépetl)이 자리잡고 있다. 피코 데 오리사바 (Pico de Orizaba)로도 알려져 있으며[4], 해발고도는 5,636m에 이른다. 화산 지대로 이루어져 있다. 베라크루스 주와 경계를 이루고 있다.

4. 하위 행정구역

217개의 시로 이루어져 있다.
면적이 워낙 넓어서 북쪽과 동쪽으로는 틀락스칼라주와 베라크루스, 남쪽으로는 오아하카주, 서쪽으로는 멕시코주, 모렐로스주와 접해있다. 특히 베라크루스 북쪽 지역과 접하는 곳은 타마울리파스 주와 직접 접하지는 않지만, 탐피코까지 222km 정도밖에 떨어져 있지 않아서 타마울리파스 주와 접한 거나 마찬가지다.

5. 치안

주도인 푸에블라 데 사라고사의 치안은 그럭저럭 괜찮고 멕시코 남부 지역답게 마약 카르텔이 별로 없다. 있어도 군소 카르텔 수준이지만 멕시코 시티보다는 약간 위험한 편이니 주의하자.

테와칸 (Tehuacán)에서 베라크루스주 오리사바로 넘어가는 길에[5] 미국이나 유럽 쪽으로 수출하는 화물이 실린[6] 트레일러들을 노린 강도가 득실거리고 있으니 주의가 필요하다. 트레일러들을 노리는 강도들이라 일반 여행객들에게는 영향이 안 갈 거라고 생각하는 경우가 있는데, 이들이 수틀리면 버스 등을 공격하여 승객들의 금품을 훔치기 때문에 더욱 위험하다. 마약 카르텔 어쩌구보단 이러한 강도 패거리가 여행자들에게는 실제로 위험요소가 된다. 카르텔이 미쳤다고 그것도 이역만리 아시아에서 온 여행객을 공격하지 않고 되려 관광업으로 가이드를 자처하거나 경비업으로 보호해 준다. 문제는 막무가내인 강도 패거리들이다. 멕시코도 여느 아메리카 국가들처럼 권총강도가 기본이며 총 맞아 절명하기 싫으면 순순히 요구를 들어줘야 한다. 그래도 멕시코 시티나 푸에블라 등지에서 출발하여 목적지가 코사말로아판 이남인데, 육로로 반드시 이동해야 하는 상황이라면 좀 돌아서 가더라도 할라파 엔리케스나 베라크루스에서 환승해서 이동하도록 하자. 멕시코 150D번 고속도로 대신 멕시코 140D번 고속도로를 경유해서 이동하여 오리사바를 거칠 일이 없기 때문인데, 이렇게 해서 칸쿤이나 치아파스 등지로 가면 오리사바를 거쳐서 가는 경로보다 2 ~ 3시간 정도 더 걸리지만 목숨보다 중요한 건 없을 것이다. 간헐적으로 멕시코 시티에서 보카 델 리오로 자전거로 가는 단체들이 있는데, 이쪽도 136번 국도를 탄 뒤 140D번 고속도로를 타고 가지 오리사바 쪽으로 안간다.

같은 이유로 산 마르틴 텍스멜루칸 (San Martín Texmelucan) 쪽도 위험한 편이다. 주로 베라크루스로 가는 화물 기사들을 노리는데, 할라파 쪽으로 가는 고속도로는 민자도로라 통행료가 비싸서, 아무래도 멕시코 아르코 노르테 고속도로 타면서 비싼 댓가를 치렀는데 더 치르기 싫어서 쿰브레 데 말트라타 쪽으로 나 있는 재정구간으로 가다가 변을 당한다. 이곳 또한 기름도둑들이 많았던 곳이다.

6. 여담

푸에블라 주의 북동부 지역에 누에바 네카사 (Nueva Necaxa)라는 곳이 있는데, 리가 MX의 클루브 네카사 팀과는 전혀 상관이 없다. 클루브 네칵사는 아과스칼리엔테스에 연고를 두고 있기 때문이며, 누에바 네칵사라는 도시와 전혀 인연이 없다.
디즈니 애니메이션 영화 코코(애니메이션)의 배경지이기도 하다.
