마이클 잭슨의 정규 8집 Dangerous의 여섯 번째 싱글로 1992년 1월 14일 발매되었다.

마이클이 직접 작사, 작곡했으며 잭슨과 브루스 스위디언이 프로듀싱했다. 반전 가사와 세상을 더 나은 곳으로 만들고자 하는 잭슨의 바람으로 가득 찬 곡이며, 존 레논의 Imagine과 마찬가지로 본인 작사, 작곡의 We Are the World와 함께 평화와 인류애를 상징하는 곡으로 꼽힌다.

2. 상세

마이클 잭슨이 Bad(싱글) 녹음 기간 중 작곡한 곡이다. 원래 1990년 발매 예정이었던 컴필레이션 앨범 'Decade'에 보너스 트랙으로 수록하려 했다고. 원래 제목은 'Feed the World' 였으며, 'Heal the World'로 제목을 바꾼 이유는 이미 1984년 전 세계를 강타한 히트곡이자 영국 아티스트들이 모여 부른 자선 곡인 'Do They Know It's Christmas' 라는 곡의 B-Side곡이 'Feed the world' 였기 때문이다.

다큐멘터리 《마이클 잭슨과 함께 살아보기》에서 잭슨은 네버랜드 랜치의 "기부 나무"에서 이 노래를 만들었다고 말했다. 그는 또한 어린이들의 삶의 질을 향상시키고 아이들에게 다른 사람들을 돕는 방법을 가르치기 위해 고안된 자선 단체인 <힐 더 월드 재단>을 설립했다.

이 노래는 제임스 벌저의 장례식에서도 연주되었고, 잭슨은 제임스 벌저의 이름을 딴 학교인 제임스 벌저 레드 벌룬 센터의 교가로서 이 노래를 기증했다.

이 곡은 1992년 12월 영국 싱글 차트 2위에 올랐다. 빌보드 핫 100에서는 27위로 다소 아쉬운 결과를 기록했지만, 영국에서 2위, 네덜란드에서 4위, 벨기에에서 3위를 기록하는 등 유럽에서 크게 히트했다.

이 곡은 A장조로 작곡되었으며 E3부터 C#5까지 걸쳐 있고, 분당 80박자의 템포를 가지고 있다.

처음 흐르는 전주는 토토의 멤버인 데이비드 페이치의 아버지가 작곡했으며, 자넷 잭슨의 'Livin in a world' 라는 곡과 비슷한 분위기라고 몇몇 청자들은 평가하기도 한다.

마이클 잭슨의 수많은 곡들 중에서도 최고의 명곡 중 하나로 꼽히며, 우리나라에서도 인기투표 4위를 기록할 정도로 히트했다. 2001년, 팬들과의 인터넷 채팅에서 본인이 만든 가장 자랑스러운 곡이라고 할 만큼 마이클 잭슨의 각별한 애정이 담긴 곡. 2009년 7월 7일 LA에서 열린 잭슨의 추모식에서도 <We ARe The World>와 <Heal The World>의 앙상블이 연주되었다.[1] R&B 가수 시에라는 2009년 BET 어워드에서 잭슨을 추모하기 위해 이 노래를 불렀다.

잭슨은 제27회 슈퍼볼 하프타임 쇼[2]에서 35,000명의 플래시 카드 공연으로 이 노래를 불렀다.

뮤직 비디오는 조 피트카가 감독했다. 내전으로 고통 받는 나라들에 살고 있는 어린이들의 삶을 다루고 있다. 마이클 잭슨의 뮤직비디오 잭슨이 출연하지 않은 몇 안 되는 비디오 중 하나이다.[3] 《Dangerous: The Short Films》와 《Michael Jackson's Vision》에 포함된 버전은 트랙의 특별한 "구어" 버전에서 잭슨의 연설을 특징으로 하는 소개 비디오가 있다. 이 버전은 뮤직 비디오를 다루는 《Video Greatest Hits - HIStory에는 포함되지 않았다.
