1. 개요

일본의 라이트 노벨 R.O.D를 원작으로 하는 애니메이션 시리즈 중 OVA.

2001년 스튜디오 딘에서 OVA 애니메이션화 되었다. 제목은 「R.O.D -READ OR DIE-」이고 각 30분으로 3화 완결. 원작자 '쿠라타 히데유키'가 각본을 맡았다.

2. 특징

기본적인 줄거리는 루트비히 판 베토벤, 삼장법사, 히라가 겐나이, 장 앙리 파브르, 오토 릴리엔탈 [1] 등 유전자 샘플을 이용해 특수능력을 지닌채 만들어진 위인의 클론들이 나타나 테러를 일으킨다. 그들의 목적은 늘어난 인구수를 감소시켜 보다 뛰어난 인간들만 남기려는 말살 계획. 이를 독서광이면서 대영도서관 특수공작부 에이전트인 요미코 리드맨과 낸시 마쿠하리를 중심으로 그 동료들이 저지하려는 내용.

전문 성우가 아니라 일반 아이돌인 미우라 리에코(三浦理恵子)가 성우로 활동한 최초이자 최후의 작품. 요미코 리드맨 역을 맡았다. 처음이라고 보기에는 매우 능숙하게 연기했다. 기타 성우 관련은 TVA 문서를 참조.

오프닝에 쓰인 90초 버전. 당시 애니메이션계에 충격을 안겼던 카우보이 비밥의 영향이 엿보이는 부분으로, 펑키 재즈풍의 메인 테마곡이 사용되었다.

2004년 애니원을 통해 한국에서도 더빙으로 방영되어 한국에서 R.O.D 시리즈에 대한 인지도를 상승시킨 작품이다.

다만 DVD나 비디오나 한국 케이블 방송용까지 작은 화면 오류가 있었다. 바로 요미코가 히라가 겐나이를 쓰러뜨릴때 윗화면이 작게 화면이 에러가 나는 부분이 그대로 방송 및 발매되었다(국내 정발 출시판 및 케이블 방송판이나 국내 미발매전 일어판까지 확인한 사항). 결국 블루레이 판에서는 이게 고쳐졌다.(화면만 보면 잘 모르겠지만 하얀 배경화면에 올려보면 맨 위에 검게 화면이 칠해진 에러를 고쳤다.)

7. 평가

여러모로 퀄리티가 높은 작품이다. 방대한 스케일과 고퀄리티의 작화를 보여줬으며 영화에 가까운 연출감각을 제대로 살려내어 좋은 평가를 받았다. 애니메이터 이시하마 마사시가 두각을 보인 작품으로 이시하마 마사시와 친한 실력파 애니메이터 들이 다수 투입되어 작화도 뛰어나다. 스즈키 히로후미, 마츠타케 토쿠유키, 타가시라 시노부, 나카타니 세이이치, 치바 타카히로, 우메츠 야스오미, 사이 후미히데, 타카하시 신야, 츠루 토시유키, 무라타 토시하루, 스가누마 에이지, 이노우에 히데키, 오구라 노부토시 등이 참여했다.

스토리 또한 원작이나 기타 매체를 보지 않더라도 좋을 만큼 보기 좋게 깔끔하게 제작되었다. 전체적인 내용을 다 알아야 되는 통상적인 일본 애니와는 다르게 미국드라마인 CSI 과학수사대 시리즈나, 크리미널 마인드처럼 한 시즌의 전체적인 맥락을 몰라도 각 화를 시청자들이 보는 데에 아무런 지장이 없는 것과 비슷하다. 여러 에이전트들이 이런 사건을 해결하고 있다는 것만 알고 즐겨도 무리가 없다. TVA는 OVA와는 다르게 이쪽은 전형적인 일본식 내용으로 26화 통째로 이어졌다.

이와사키 타쿠가 담당한 애니메이션 OST도 매우 좋은 평가를 받았다.

평론가 히카와 류스케는 감정 묘사가 뛰어나고 초능력에 대한 아이디어가 뛰어나다고 호평했다. #
