1. 개요

수영할 때 사용하는 물건. 보통 타이어처럼 생겼는데 가운데 구멍이 뚫려 있고 공기를 넣게 되어 있어서, 구멍에 몸을 끼우고 물에 들어가면 몸이 뜨게 된다.

국립국어원의 정의상 고무, 연질 PVC 등의 소재로 만들어진, 사람의 허리가 들어갈 수 있는 'Torus'(원환면) 의 형태로 가스나 공기 따위를 넣어 부력을 띄는 것으로 수영에서 보조적으로 사용하는 제품을 의미한다.

아동을 타겟으로 한 튜브는 다양한 색과 캐릭터가 그려진 경우가 많고, 차양막이 설치되었거나, 장난감 핸들이 달려있는 경우도 꽤 있다. 또한, 밑으로 빠지는 사고를 예방하기 위해 팬티 형태의 받침부가 있는 '보행기 튜브' 제품 또한 많이 출시되고 있다.

유아를 타겟으로 한 튜브에는 안전을 조금 더 강조하기 위해 스트랩이 포함된 경우도 있고, 소재 자체를 팽창식이 아닌 'Polyethylene Foam' 등의 완충재 소재로 제작된 경우도 있는 편이다.

4.1.3. 좌식형

주 몸체가 평평한 형태의 튜브들로 일부는 동·식물이나 기계 등의 형태가 추가된 경우도 꽤 많긴 하나, 기본적으로는 좌식 형태의 튜브로 편안하게 앉거나 누울 수 있는 제품이다.

많은 제품이 안정적인 형태 덕분에 성인이 올라타도 균형을 잡기가 쉽고, 일부 제품은 성인 3~4명까지 올라갈 수 있는 튜브들도 종종 출시되며, 과일, 피자, 캔디 등 심플하면서도 색감 있는 디자인 덕분에 성인에게 인기가 꽤 많은 제품군이다.

다만 과도하게 큰 사이즈의 제품들은 워터파크나 호텔 등에서는 타인의 부상과 불편을 우려해 반입제한품목으로 취급하는 경우가 많기 때문에 사람이 많은 공공장소에서의 사용은 조금 어려운 편.

4.2. 보조 제품

단어의 정의에 정확히 맞는 제품군은 아니긴 하나, 공기를 넣어 부풀리는 제품 중 안전을 보조해 주거나 형태가 완전히 다른 제품들도 '튜브' 로 통칭하며, 주요 제품은 아래와 같다.

4.2.1. 암튜브

영어로는 'Arm floats' 으로 부르며, 팔에 끼워 부력과 균형을 보조해 주는 제품으로 주 사용 연령층은 유아동이긴 하나 성인을 위한 사이즈의 제품도 많이 출시되고 있어 물놀이를 할 때 장착하는 사람이 꽤 되는 편이다.

4.3.1. 비치볼

영어로 'Beach ball', 국내에서는 '공튜브' 라 불리기도 하며, 구 형태의 단순한 튜브로 유아동이 안전하게 놀 수 있도록 비치발리볼의 대체 성격으로 출시되는 제품이기도 하다. 저렴한 가격 때문에 업체들이 홍보를 위해 인쇄 판촉물로서도 자주 판매하여 해변가나 수영장에서 굉장이 자주 보이는 튜브 중 하나다.

4.3.2. 분수 튜브

국내에서는 다소 생소할 수 있으나 해외에서는 'Inflatable Sprinkler' 라 불리는 제품으로, 마당이 넓은 미국 등의 국가에서는 나름 흔한 튜브다. 하단에 고정 핀을 박을 수 있는 부분과 튜브 내부에 분수 호스가 내장되어 물을 주변에 뿌릴 수 있기 때문에 어린이들이 주변에서 시원하게 놀 수 있는 게 특징인 제품이다.

5. 여담

구명환(구명부환)도 원환 형태와 물에 뜨는 특징 때문에 '구명 튜브'로 불리기는 하나 면밀히 따지면 '구조 용품' 이지 '레저 용품' 은 아니며, 가소제가 거의 없는 딱딱한 제품으로 '튜브'라 부르기는 조금 애매한 면이 있다. 무게도 꽤 되는 탓에 잘못 던져 구조 대상에게 맞으면 더 큰 사고로 이어질 수 있기 때문에 수상안전요원만 사용할 수 있도록 되어 있으며, 일반인은 구명 부표 정도로 사용이 제한된다.

1990년대 초반까지만 해도 일본어의 영향 때문인지 왠지 모르게 "쥬부"나 "츄브"라고도 불렸었다. 지금도 어르신들 중에는 쥬부나 츄브라고 하는 분들이 가끔 있으며, 경상도에선 "우끼"라고도 부르기도 했었다. \[일본어로 튜브를 뜻하는 '浮き輪(우키와)'에서 유래된 단어로 주로 대형트럭의 타이어 튜브를 재활용해서 만든 검정색 튜브를 우끼라고 부른다.\]
일본에서도 해외 튜브 수입이 많아져 영어권의 영향을 꽤 받은 터라 원환형이 아닌 디자인 튜브를 부를 때는 영어 이름인 'Floats'(플로트)의 음차 발음으로 'フロート'(후로토) 로 부르는 경우가 많다.

원환면 튜브의 경우, 애니메이션 등의 캐릭터가 프린팅된 튜브는 어른이용 컬렉션 아이템으로 이용되기도 한다, 제품 특성상 아동용 애니메이션 위주로 나오기 때문이다. 대개 도안의 퀄리티가 높고 가격도 다른 장르의 굿즈에 비해서는 싼 경우가 많아 튜브가 나올 일이 없는 타 장르 팬의 부러움을 사기도 한다. 물론 이것도 발매된 지 시간이 지나 구하기 힘들면 가격이 천정부지로 뛴다.
