face off적대시하는 두 사람(세력) 사이의 대결을 의미하는 단어.
단어만 보면 "얼굴(페이스)을 떼어내다(오프)"라는 뜻으로 해석할 수도 있겠지만 실제로는 그런 의미는 없다[1]. 여기서 페이스는 동사로, 상대를 직면한다는 뜻이다. 이 두 가지 해석을 다 사용한 영화가 페이스 오프(영화). 말 그대로 형사와 악당이 대결하면서 서로의 얼굴을 떼어내는 이야기를 그리고 있다....
2. 아이스하키의 용어
보스턴 브루인스의 연습경기중 페이스 오프 장면. 브루인스는 리그에서 가장 페이스 오프 승률이 높은 팀중 하나다.
경기를 시작하거나, 중단된 경기를 재개할때 경기장 내 5개의 서클, 혹은 블루라인 밖의 4개의 점 중 하나에서 양 팀 선수 1명 사이로 심판이 퍽을 떨어뜨리는 행위. 농구의 점프볼, 축구의 골킥후 미드필더들의 헤더 공방과 유사하게 아이스 하키의 포제션 빌드업때 가장 먼저 퍽 소유권, 즉 공격권을 따내는 중요한 행위기 때문에 각 팀의 센터들은 이걸 잘해야 된다. 심판의 움직임과 떨어지는 퍽을 매의 눈으로 지켜보다가 상대 스틱을 막고, 자기 스틱으로 날카롭게 퍽을 쓸어가는 손재주가 필수이다.
특히나 아이스하키의 페이스 오프는 페널티샷을 제외한 모든 상황에서 경기를 재개할때 시행된다. 피리어드 시작은 물론 득점, 페널티, 아이싱, 오프사이드, 잘못된 휘슬등 어떤 상황이라도 재개는 무조건 페이스오프로 한다. 즉 아무리 밀리는 경기를 하더라도 페이스 오프 승률이 높으면 일단 퍽을 가져오기 때문에 우리는 역습을 하기 쉽고, 상대는 아무리 밀어붙여도 페이스 오프때문에 흐름을 끊길 수 있다.
페이스 오프를 잘하는 센터가 많으면 항상 경기를 끊고 나서 퍽을 뺏어오고 주도권을 잡기 쉬우므로 늪 하키를 만드는데 최적의 조건이다. 위의 보스턴 브루인스가 대표적으로 NHL 역사상 최고의 페이스 오프 스페셜리스트로 손꼽히는 파트리스 베르제롱(위 영상에서 페이스 오프를 하는 가운데 노란 유니폼)을 비롯해 리그 최상급 페이스 오프 전문 센터가 많은데 이들의 활약으로 수비나 페널티 킬링등 다양한 상황에서 선공을 먹고 가므로 이런 팀 상대로는 쉽사리 경기를 끊을 수 없고 라인 시프트때 역습맞고 실점할 가능성도 매우 올라간다.

배스킨라빈스배 KPGA TOUR 4차 리그 엑스트라 매치의 공식맵. 인디안 라멘트를 지상맵으로 전면 대폭 수정한 맵. 초기 버전은 2.10 버전에 미네랄 하나만 추가하였고 지상맵으로 변경하였으나 여기에 1.02 버전으로 넘어오면서 사용되지 않았던 미네랄 타입 3을 추가하고 자원 배치도 전면 대폭 수정하였다. 대표적인 테란맵 중 하나로 앞마당 먹기 정말 힘든 맵으로 덕분에 저그만 죽어났다. 프로토스는 뭐 그냥 무난. 게다가 본진 언덕 입구 방향 때문에 스타팅 유불리도 심해서 답이 안 나올 정도다.
어느 정도로 힘들었냐면 KPGA TOUR 4차 리그 결승전에서 조용호가 여기서 이윤열을 상대로 한 경기를 승리하자 해설진들이 경악을 할 정도다(...).
5. TV 프로그램
2011년 1월 26일부터 2018년 8월 7일까지 Syfy 채널에서 방영된 특수 효과 메이크업 아티스트 경연 프로그램이다.배우 맥켄지 웨스트모어[2]가 호스트를 맡고 있다. 우승자에겐 자동차와 1년간 유명 브랜드의 메이크업 제품 공급권이 부여된다.
심사위원은 글랜 헤트릭(Glenn Hetrick)[3], 베 닐(Ve Neill),[4]
경연 내용은 간단하게 설명하면 주제에 맞게 모델을 분장하는 것이다. 제한시간은 3일로 대개 첫날에는 4시간, 이틀째는 10시간, 경연일에는 4시간+무대 올라가기 전 1시간이 주어진다.
다른 여타 경연 프로그램처럼 세 명의 심사위원이 심사를 하고 탈락시킨다. 과제에 실제 업무가 연계되는 경우도 있다.[7] 이러다보니 참가자들은 영화 관계자로부터 러브콜[8]을 많이 받게 되었다고 한다.
