1. 개요

Apple의 본사. 미국 캘리포니아 쿠퍼티노에 위치해 있다.

2. 역사

2006년 4월, 스티브 잡스가 기존 쿠퍼티노 캠퍼스 인근에 새로운 Apple 캠퍼스 2를 짓는다고 발표하였다. 물론 iPhone이 전자제품 역사상 전무후무한 대히트를 기록하기 전이었으니 이런 거대한 규모가 과거부터 고려하던 것이었는지는 의문이다.

2011년 6월 7일에 잡스가 직접 쿠퍼티노 시의회에서 Apple 캠퍼스 2 건축 계획을 발표했는데, 이로부터 2개월 후에 CEO직을 사임하고 동년 10월에 세상을 떠나면서 잡스가 마지막으로 공개적으로 모습을 드러낸 자리가 되었다[2]. 2014년에 만들기 시작하여 2016년에 완공될 예정이었으나 일정이 다소 지연되어 2017년 완공으로 예정되었다. 현재 2017년 4월에 직원들에게 공개하기로 발표됐다.#

2017년 2월 22일 Apple 뉴스룸에서 Apple 캠퍼스 2의 공식 명칭을 Apple Park로 명명했다.

부지 선정에 대해 재미있는 일화가 있다. 당시 잡스는 부지 선정에 몹시 심혈을 기울였는데, 원래 그 부지는 외주의 비중이 커져서 더이상 큰 부지가 필요없게 된 휴렛팩커드의 구 사옥 터이기도 하다. 즉, 휴렛팩커드를 다니다가 서로를 처음 만나게 된 잡스와 워즈니악에게는 추억이 깃든 장소다. 니혼게이자이 신문은 당시 이를 두고 “Apple이 HP [3]의 정통 후계자라는 강한 자부심을 드러냈다”고 분석했다. #

2017년 1월에 드론으로 상공 촬영한 영상에 따르면 공사가 상당한 수준으로 진척된 것을 확인할 수 있다.

2017년 4월 완공되었으며 뉴스거리로서 소소한 화제가 되었다.

2017년 9월 13일 오전 2시[4]에 iPhone 8 시리즈와 iPhone X이 발표된 Apple 이벤트가 Apple Park 내의 Steve Jobs Theater에서 개최되었다.

3. 특징

부지는 약 14만 평 규모이다. 주 건물과 R&D 센터, 극장[5] 등의 건물이 있다. 비좁았던 과거 캠퍼스와는 달리 운동시설, 공원, 강당, 카페테리아 등의 편의 시설이 많다고 한다. 건설비용은 약 50억 달러(한화 약 5조 3,400억)이며, 사옥은 71만㎡의 크기로 거의 블럭 하나를 통째로 점유하는 수준. 13,000명의 직원들이 일할 수 있는 공간을 가지고 있다. 잡스 최후의 프로젝트답게 디테일에 많은 신경을 썼는데, Apple 캠퍼스는 전력 자급률 100%를 달성하려는 것이 목표라 하는데 건물 전체에 엄청난 수의 태양광 패널을 사용한 태양광 발전기를 설치하여 자가 발전이 가능하게 했다는 특징이 있다.

주 건물은 UFO와 유사한 원형 모형의 거대한 건축물로 도넛 형식의 원형을 띠고 있으며, 펜타곤처럼 중앙은 비어 있으며, 안팎으로 많은 나무를 심어 친환경적인 경관을 조성하여 안에는 산책로와 인공 호수가 위치한다고 한다.

이렇게 원형이고 가운데에 나무가 우거진 공원이 있는 형태는 1970년대 러시아 같은 동유럽에서 많이 지은 브루탈리즘식 아파트와 유사한 구조로 다만 Apple Park는 커튼 월 방식으로 구조는 비슷해도 형태는 훨씬 미래 지향적으로 되어 있다. 또한 이러한 형태는 출입구가 20여개로 많아 거주민도 헷갈려했다는 단점이 있는데 Apple Park는 출입구를 큰 정문으로 통합해 이런 단점을 해결했다.

주 건물은 12,000명을 수용한다. 건물의 측면은 Apple Store처럼 통유리를 사용하며, 중간중간 일종의 차양을 둘러 층을 구분한다.

건축 영상을 보면 측면을 4층 높이의 유리로 덮는 것을 볼 수 있는데, Apple에 따르면 건물에 쓰인 유리 패널은 전 세계에서 가장 큰 곡면 유리라고 한다.

그 외에도 캠퍼스 내부에서 사과나무 등을 심고 과일들을 정기적으로 수확해 잼을 만든다고 한다. 캠퍼스 부지가 과거에 과수원이었다고 한다.

4. 시설

Apple Park의 상징이자 본사 사옥이다. Apple Park라고 하면 보통 여기를 떠올린다.

명칭은 말 그대로 마치 고리 같은 모습에서 따온 것이다.

Apple Watch Ultra 패키지에 나오는 위경도 좌표(37°20'5.5674"N, 122°0'32.3274"W)는 The Ring의 한가운데이다.

4.2. The Observatory

2024년 9월 완공되어 같은 달 열린 Apple 이벤트에서 공개되었다.

Steve Jobs Theater와 함께 미디어 행사에 쓰인다. 정확히는 키노트가 끝난 후 다양한 제품 브리핑이 진행되는 곳이다.

극장이며 The Ring과 떨어진 곳에 있다. Apple의 창립자이자 초대 회장인 스티브 잡스의 이름을 따왔다.

Apple 이벤트와 WWDC 등 미디어 행사에 활용되며 발표 영상 초반부에 주로 나온다. 콘서트 등의 다른 행사가 열리기도 한다.

4.4. 주차장

주차 면적은 대략 14,000대로 대한민국의 대형 아파트 단지인 헬리오시티의 주차장보다 크고 올림픽파크 포레온 주차장보다는 작다. 영상의 1분 41초를 확인해보면 알겠지만 규모가 워낙 크다 보니 신호등이 설치되어 있다.

4.6. Mirage

Apple이 의뢰하여 Apple Park Visitor Center 옆에 설치된 야외 유리 조각품이다. 2023년 5월에 완성되었고 같은 해 9월 Apple 이벤트 키노트 영상에도 등장하였다.

건축가 케이티 패터슨(Katie Paterson)과 건축 스튜디오 Zeller & Moye의 협업으로 만들어진 작품이며, 전 세계의 사막에서 모래를 채취해 주조한 유리 기둥들이 미로처럼 배열되어 있다. 각 유리 기둥에는 조명이 설치되어 시간대에 따라 다른 빛을 낸다. 유리 기둥들의 개수만 400개가 넘는다고 한다.
