본래 초지역 북쪽 일대는 광대한 연립주택 단지로 구성되어 있었으며 대흥타운 등 일반 연립단지에서 과거 공단역이 초지역의 옛 이름이었다는 것을 증명하듯 풍년주택 등 중소기업에서 사택으로 운영하던 연립주택등이 밀집한 곳이었다. 70~80년대 지어진 연립주택 답게 저층이었고 엘리베이터도 없었으며 집도 많이 좁았으나 전철이 가까이 있고 바로 옆에는 화랑유원지라는 큰 공원이 있는데다 안산시청과 중앙동 상권과도 가까운 연결된, 입지가 좋은 곳이기 때문에 2016년 재개발 이후 많은 아파트 단지가 들어서게 되었다.
