1. 개요

신비아파트 시리즈에 등장하는 퇴마사 소재의 문제점에 대한 문서.

모두 2기부터 나온 문제점들이다.

2. 상세

2.1. 편애로 인한 호러물로서의 정체성 상실

1기 때만 해도 귀신의 약점을 발견해 머리를 쓰면서 퇴치하는 등 여러 가지 방법을 이용해서 귀신을 제압했는데[1][2] 2기부터 귀신들이 강해지고, 이 때문에 귀신 제압을 퇴마사들이 거의 독점하면서 그냥 싸워서 제압하는 단순한 전개가 늘어났다.

전투 패턴화는 배틀 요소가 있는 타 작품에서도 흔히 있는 일이지만, 유독 신비아파트에서 문제가 되는 이유는 퇴마사들이 귀신을 손쉽게 무찌르는 전개와 다른 영적 인물의 부재 때문에 호러물로서의 급박감 및 카타르시스가 사라지기 때문이다.[3] 다른 캐릭터들이 귀신들에게 아무 저항 못하고 실컷 굴러도 강림, 리온, 사라, 이안, 귀도 현 같은 강한 캐릭터들이 나오기만 하면 바로 끝나는데 과연 이것을 호러물 및 괴담물이라고 불러야 할까? 이건 괴담물이 아니라 판타지 배틀물이라고 해도 믿을 정도다.

퇴마사들의 캐릭터 디자인도 실제 퇴마사가 아닌 이름만 퇴마사인 마법사라는 비판도 많다. 실제로 2기에 들어 리온과 아이기스가 추가되고, 최강림의 복장과 무기가 변한 이후로 비교적 현실적으로 진행되었던 신비아파트가 갑자기 판타지물로 변질되었다는 혹평이 존재한다. 이때문에 자동차의 디자인 페이스리프트처럼, 퇴마사들의 무기(금룡퇴마검, 흑룡도, 세피르카드, 클리프카드 등)와, 아이기스, 귀도퇴마사의 복장을 호러 장르에 맞는 비주얼과 분위기로 바꿔야 한다는 의견도 있다. 어차피 매 시즌마다 강림의 무기는 바뀌니까 불가능한 이야기도 아니다.

또 최강림과 리온 레이몬드는 신비아파트의 거주자가 아닌 건 물론 고스트볼 역시 사용하지 않았다. 결국 애니메이션 제목과 맞지 않는 주객전도 내지 모순이 생겨버렸다.

다른 귀신이 등장하는 작품인 도깨비, 화유기, 호텔 델루나를 보면, 퇴마사인 최강림같은 능력자(김신(도깨비), 손오공(요괴), 장만월(반인반령))[4]이 등장했는데도 귀신의 공포 분위기를 해치지 않았다. 결국 퇴마사 존재 자체보다는, 호러 내지는 귀신이라는 주제에 안 맞는 형태로 분위기가 바뀌었고 연출이 호러에 적합하지 않다는 것이 문제라는 것이다. 물론 저 세 작품과는 달리 12세 관람가고 어린이 대상 작품이라서 수위와 분위기는 다를 수밖에 없으나, 이미 1기에서는 진짜로 호러에 맞는 퇴마사 분위기를 묘사한 선례가 있기 때문에 수위만 다를 뿐 이론상 충분히 가능하다.

게다가 아래에 나온 대로 '퇴마사는 원귀를 상대할 경우 귀신을 소멸이 아니라 승천시켜야 하니 전투력을 발휘할 수 있는 선이 제한되어 있어 전력을 못 다한다'는 설정이라면 해결 가능하다. 그리고 12세 관람가면, 엄밀히 말하면 생일 지난 초등학교 6학년 이상부터 시청에 적합하기에, 호러에 맞는 1기 같은 퇴마사 분위기(광선검이 아닌 전통 검, 다채로운 부적이 아닌 단일 색상의 부적 등)를 수용할 수 있을 나이다. 또 완구 수익성과 호러 분위기는 꼭 상충해야 할 필요는 없다. 1기에서의 퇴마사 스타일이 심의에 걸리는 것도 아니고, 철제 검도 아니고 복숭아 나무검이라서, 아동에게 유해한 콘텐츠도 아니다.

2.2. 밸런스 붕괴와 아이템 편애

또 퇴마사들의 능력이 지나치게 늘어나서 캐릭터 밸런스가 붕괴되었다. 1기 때는 최강림이 유일한 퇴마사였고 사용 기술도 부적과 마방진, 사인참사검이 유일했지만 시즌 2부터 최강림의 부적 종류와 능력이 늘어나고 리온의 세피르카드까지 생기면서 밸런스 붕괴가 생겼다. 게다가 작중 내 나오는 다른 아이템인 도깨비 요요[5]와 고스트볼은 모두 사용 횟수에 제한[6]이 있는데 반면 퇴마사들의 아이템은 사용 횟수 제한도 없는 것[7]으로 묘사된다.

실제로 퇴마사의 힘으로 절대 이길 수 없는 뱀파이어 등의 초월적 존재와의 싸움이 아닌 일반 잡귀와의 싸움에서는, 작중에서 귀신 속박을 말쿠트나 중장의 나무로, 무력화는 봉인의 칼날이나 호드, 헤세드로, 방어는 티페레트로 하면서 하리를 포함한 다른 캐릭터들이 끼어들 틈이 거의 없어졌다.[8] 그래서 귀신 소환도 할 수 없는 가은, 현우의 경우 귀신 퇴치에 아무 도움도 못 주는 존재로 전락했다[9]라는 말까지 나왔다.

퇴마사 못지않게 강력한 힘을 가진 직업군으로 인형술사와 연금술사가 나오기는 했지만, 이들도 역시 마찬가지다. 인형술사는 영혼을 불태워서 각귀를 만들고 연금술사는 연금술의 댓가로 젊음을 바쳐야며 자신의 연금술을 완벽하게 컨트롤할 수 없다는 단점이 있기에 함부로 그 능력을 남용할 수가 없어서 댓가를 필요로 하지 않는 퇴마사들보다 한계가 확실하다. 또한 현재로서는 대가 끊겼는지 관련 직업들을 가진 캐릭터가 없고[10], 그나마 관련 자료가 남아있어서 독학이라도 가능한 연금술과는 달리 각귀술은 자료가 남아있다는 묘사조차도 없다.

이러한 파워밸런스는 갈수록 심해져 일반인이 따라잡기엔 너무 무리수가 되어가고 있다. 일반인이 자신의 영혼이나 목숨을 걸지 않고 귀신에게 대항하는 방법은 나오지도 않은데다가, 그나마 일반인도 활약할 수 있게 해주는 고스트볼은 성능이 좋은 편이 아니며 인간이 알아서 개조 할 수도 없고[11], 도깨비들이 강화를 시켜도 퇴마사들에 비하면 별다른 이점이 없거나 패널티가 생기는 결합품에 근본적인 문제점인 사용횟수는 상향이 불가능하다. 그렇다고 위에서 말한 인형술사나 연금술사가 되는 것은 방법을 찾는 것부터 불가능하며, 힘을 쓸때마다 리스크도 크고 일이 잘못될 위험도 매우 높다. 뱀파이어가 되는 방법도 있지만 이성을 완전히 잃은 채 평생 햇빛을 못 보며 인간의 피를 갈구하는 괴물이 되어버리는 가장 위험한 선택이기에, 자신뿐만이 아니라 주변인들까지도 나락으로 떨어뜨릴 수밖에 없어서 본전도 못 찾는다.

그럼 일반인들이 퇴마술을 배워서 전투에서 활약하면 끝나는 일이라고 생각할 수 있겠지만, 이것도 작품 내외적으로 문제가 많은 방법이다.

먼저 일반인에서 퇴마사로 분류될 수밖에 없기에 작품 외적으로 평범한 사람들이 귀신 소동을 해결하는 신비아파트의 근본적인 주제를 완전히 상실하게 될 뿐만이 아니라, 신비아파트 시리즈에서 가장 큰 비판점으로 꼽히는 퇴마사 편애를 가속화시킨다. 또한 작중에서 일반인이 본인의 힘만으로 일반적인 퇴마술을 배워서 퇴마사가 되는 일에 성공하거나 일반인이 퇴마사 견습 제안을 받는 일이 없고, 퇴마사 진명이 국가의 부름을 받을 만큼 퇴마사가 양지에서도 활동했었지만 정작 국가 소속 퇴마사 전문 부대는 없는 묘사를 통해서 아무나 퇴마사가 되진 못한다는 묘사가 나왔다. 조선시대에 퇴마사 전문 부대와 양성소가 없었다는 점까지는 퇴마사 양성이 극단적으로 매우 어려운 수준이라서 그렇다고 볼 수 있지만, 하리를 매우 잘 알며 유년기때부터 훈련을 해온 정식 퇴마사인 강림이나 리온이 하리한테 퇴마술을 가르쳐주거나 수업을 제안할 생각조차 못했다는 것[12][13]에서 일반인이 퇴마술을 한다는 것은 무리라는 것이 간접적으로 묘사되었다.

아무나 퇴마술을 배울 수 있어도, 일반인 설정의 주역 캐릭터들이 퇴마술을 배워서 본편에서 활약할 수도 없다. 그동안 과거사가 공개된 퇴마사들은 퇴마사 가문 출생이라서 태어날때부터 퇴마술을 접했거나 유년기때부터 퇴마술 훈련을 받아왔으며, 신비아파트 첫번째 OVA 특별편에서 나름 천재 퇴마사 설정인 리온이 최소 10달 이상이나 아이기스 내 최강의 퇴마사인 루만과 함께 살며 1:1 개인 교습을 받아도 카드에서 푸른 빛이 나게 하는 것 그 이상으로 카드를 쓰지 못하는 모습을 보여주었다. 단기간에 퇴마사가 된 사례가 없고 특별편에서의 묘사에선 퇴마술은 가장 간단한 기초적인 술법을 익히는 것조차 최소 10달을 넘게 걸린다는 간접적인 묘사까지 나왔지만, 신비아파트 시리즈는 1기에서 5기까지 진행될 동안 1년이라는 시간도 채 지나지 않았다는 설정이다. TVA에서 일반인이 퇴마술을 배워서 활약하려면, 최대 1년조차 안되는 그 짧은 시간 안에 퇴마술을 마스터해야한다. 리온이 10달 이상이나 루만 밑에서 직접 가르침을 받아도 세피르 카드를 능숙하게 쓸 수 없었는데, 퇴마술에 문외한이었던 사람이 1년은 커녕 한 달도 안될 시간 안에 실전 사용이 가능할 정도로 퇴마술을 익힐 수 있을 리가 없다.

특기 하나에 올인해서 훈련기간을 줄이는 방법 역시 매우 힘들다. 일반인 주역들중에서 특별한 능력을 가진 캐릭터는 귀신의 과거를 보는 사이코메트리 능력자인 하리, 예지몽을 꾸는 가은뿐이다. 청하와 리온처럼 타고난 힘을 특기로 살리기 위해서는 그 힘을 잘 알거나 같은 능력을 쓰는 스승, 자신에게 맞는 도구중에 하나라도 있어야 한다. 문제는 하리의 능력은 오직 하리만이 가진 능력이기 때문에 하리 이외의 다른 캐릭터는 쓰지 못하고 하리와 유사한 능력을 쓰게 해주는 도구조차 없으며, 가은과 비슷한 능력을 가진 사람과 도구 역시 등장하지 않았다. 그러니까 하리와 가은이 가진 선천적인 능력들이 퇴마사로서의 재능이어도, 자신에게 맞는 가르침을 줄 스승을 구하거나 적당한 도구를 찾을 수가 없기에 이 능력들을 특기로 살릴 수가 없다는 소리다. 더군다나 이 둘의 능력은 청하와 리온과는 달리, 직접 타격을 주진 못한다는 한계로 전투용으로 쓰기엔 애매하다.

일반인 주역 캐릭터가 퇴마술을 배워서 TVA에서 활약을 보인다는 말은 훈련기간을 줄일 만한 특기로 사용할 수 있는 능력이 없거나 있어도 그런 식으로 이용할 수가 없지만, 기본적인 술법을 마스터하는 것조차 10달 넘게 걸리는 퇴마술을 미처 1년도 안되는 시간에 문외한에서 실전투입이 가능한 실력까지 올려야한다는 의미다. 실현 가능성이 0%에 수렴하며, 이게 가능하면 그야말로 천년에 한번 나올까 말까한 희대의 퇴마술 천재다.

이렇게 인간들이 퇴마사가 되지 않고 전투에서 활약할 수 있는 방법들은 어딘가 반드시 치명적인 단점이 하나씩은 존재하고 일반인이 퇴마사가 되는 일도 무리라서, 사실상 처음부터 퇴마사라는 설정이 아니거나 이종족으로 태어나지 못한 캐릭터들은 점점 활약하기 힘든 게 현황이다. 이때문에 퇴마사들에게도 패널티와 제한을 줘야한다는 의견이 나오기도 했고, 심지어는 차라리 하리를 퇴마사로 만드는 전개가 훨씬 나았겠다는 한탄과 비꼼이 섞인 반응도 나왔다.

2.2.1. 최강림의 경우

일부 팬들은 리온보다 강림의 편애가 더 심하다고 지적하는데, 그 이유는 다음과 같다.

신비아파트 극장판 하늘도깨비 대 요르문간드에서도 하리와 두리한테 추가된 아이템은 1종류도 없었으면서 최강림은 파워 업 장비도 주는 등 강림 위주로 푸시 받았다. 3기에서야 겨우 업그레이드 되어 두 남매가 받을 동안 퇴마사 관련으로 나온 상품은 더 많았다.

게다가 최강림이 3기에도 극장판에 이어 액션 담당으로 쓰이는 모습이 자주 보인다. 한 화 동안은 하리 일행과 멀리 떨어뜨려 다녀오게 하거나[14] 위기에 빠졌을때 누군가의 조언이나 도움을 받게 했었다면 작중 활약에 좀 더 납득이 갔을거란 반응도 존재하는 편.

또 최강림은 비중과 분량이 배로 늘어나 아이템 강화와 각종 푸쉬를 독점하고 있다. 2기 파트 1, 극장판 2기, 4기, 5기 등 최강림이 메인인 스토리가 하리, 두리, 신비가 메인인 스토리보다 훨씬 많다.

심지어 고스트 시그널은 최강림 제외 공략 캐릭터가 두 명 더 있는 연애 시뮬레이션임에도 강림과 하리를 이미 연인 사이로 규정했다.

이로 인해 강림에 대해 안 좋은 시선을 가진 팬들이 더욱 늘어나고 있다. 게다가 4기 이후의 캐릭터 붕괴와 생각 짧은 행적 때문인지 민폐 캐릭터 순위권에도 올라오기까지 했다.#1 #2

2.3. 지나친 퇴마사의 개입

1기 때의 최강림은 지하국대적 봉인에 쓸 악귀를 모으려고 했기 때문에 악귀가 나오는 에피소드에만 개입하고 다른 귀신들이 나오는 에피소드에는 개입하지 않아서 지나치게 퇴마사가 개입한다는 문제가 없었지만,[15] 2기부터는 최강림이 특정 목적도 없이 아무 귀신이나 퇴마해 버리는 것은 물론 강림과 비슷한 퇴마사인 리온이 등장하게 되면서 퇴마사들이 지나칠 정도로 개입해 다른 캐릭터들의 비중이 사라진다는 불만이 생겼다. 예시로는 바알제붑과 우사첩편이 있다.

우사첩 편
이가은과 이안이 주연인 스토리임에도 퇴마사 둘을 억지로 귀신 퇴치에 끼어들게 해서 전개를 산만하게 만들었다. 게다가 하리를 이미 고스트볼로 귀신 소환했다고 태연하게 전투를 구경만 하는 존재로 만들었으니 자연스럽게 비중을 많이 차지 하게 되었다. 이와 유사한 전개는 입질쟁이 편에서도 본 바 있다.

바알제붑 편
갑자기 나온 퇴마사들 때문에 원래대로라면 귀신 소동이 해결된 뒤에 나오는 후일담(원래 상태로 돌아온 르네아파트 주민들과 일상 등)을 다음 화 프롤로그로 넘겨버렸다.

백사첩 편
우사첩 편과 마찬가지로 아이기스 없이 가은과 이안, 지훈만으로 진행해도 무리 없었을 거라는 평이 상당하다.

와이번 편
시리즈 최초로 괴담물이 아닌 퇴마사를 메인으로 한 소년만화식 전개를 사용했는데, 이 때문에 호불호가 크게 갈렸다. 특히 괴담물을 기대했던 시청자들의 혹평이 많은 편이다.

철륜귀 편
시리즈 최초로 철도 소재 에피소드가 나왔고 귀신의 디자인도 잘 뽑혀서 호평을 받았지만, 강림 개입 이후로는 재미가 없어졌다는 비판이 많다.

빨간마스크 편
해당 에피소드 역시 강림을 갑툭튀 식으로 개입시켰다는 비판을 들었다. 게다가 빨간마스크는 유명한 소재라서 빨간마스크를 이렇게 소모한 게 심히 아쉽다는 비판까지 나왔다.[16]

1기 때는 문제가 없었지만[17], 현재 들어서는 퇴마사 관련 이야기를 우려먹고 있다는 말도 나오고 있는데, 예시는 다음과 같다.

신 캐릭터, 악역, 단역 상관없이 퇴마사 관련 이야기는 계속 나오고 있다.[20] 일부 팬들은 이것을 보며 매 시즌마다 퇴마사 관련 내용을 우려먹기만 해서 식상하다는 불만이 나왔다. 3기때 처럼 퇴마사가 아닌 캐릭터들이 나오는 건 한 시즌 정도만 할애하면서 퇴마사들은 두 시즌 이상 편애하니 말이 나올 수밖에 없는 것.

이 문제를 해결하기 위해서는 귀신과 관련된 다른 방향의 직업을 가진 캐릭터를 등장시키는 대안이 있다. 귀신 관련 직업은 퇴마사만 있는 게 아니다. 고스트볼을 이용해 귀신들을 소환해서 싸우게 하는 다른 일반인, 고스트볼 없이 주술로 귀신을 다루는 소환사, 직접 싸우지 않고 귀신과 소통하여 승천/퇴치에 도움을 주는 영매 등.

2.4.1. 퇴마사 위주 스토리 문제

현재까지 나온 신비아파트 각 시즌의 메인 스토리를 정리해보면 다음과 같다.

5기 중에 1기와 3기를 제외하면 전부 퇴마사와 연관되어 있다. 이 때문에 퇴마사 스토리를 너무 우려먹어서 메인 주인공인 하리의 성장 서사가 나오지 못하고 있다는 비판이 상당히 있다.

2.5. 애매모호한 설정

이렇게 퇴마사를 주구장창 우려먹고 있으면서, 막상 그들에 대한 설정은 제대로 풀지를 않는다. 퇴마사는 어떻게 될 수 있는가, 하리와 두리, 파르켈도 어찌됐든 귀신들과 싸우고 봉인할 줄 아는데 왜 퇴마사로 불리지 않는가, 퇴마사가 될 수 있는 체질이 따로 있는가, 일반인도 열심히 수련하면 퇴마사가 될 수 있는가, 퇴마사 형질은 유전인가 등. 작중에서 이들에 대한 대답은 전혀 나오지 않았다. 그나마 일반인은 고스트볼로 소환하는 걸 빼면 귀신을 다룰 수 없다고 언급됐고, 강한 주술을 사용하다 목숨이 위태로워지는 묘사가 여러 번 있었지만, 그 이상으로 자세히 풀린 적은 없다.

3. 문제가 생긴 원인

퇴마사 관련 문제가 생긴 이유는 1기에서 강림이 큰 인기를 얻은 이후로 퇴마사를 무리하게 밀어주다가 이 사단이 생긴 것이 거의 확실하다. 제작진 입장에서도 작품 외적 면으로 봐도 어쩔 수 없는 면도 있는 게, 유아동 시청자들에게는 귀신 소환만 하고 만약 소환 귀신이 오히려 반격당해 소멸하면 죽을 위기에 처하게 되는 하리&두리 남매보다 검을 들고 직접 귀신들과 싸우며 봉인을 위한 부적도 사용하는 강림이 멋져보일 수밖에 없으며 실제로 1기 강림의 인기는 절정에 달했다. 2기부터 등장한 리온도 세피르카드의 힘을 이용하여 마법사를 연상케 하는 본인이 직접 싸우는 스타일이다 보니 인기가 많았다. 만약 애초에 1기부터 강림의 비중이 거의 없는 수준이었다면 이런 사단이 안 일어났을 수도 있었을지도 모른다.

4. 현황

4.1. 3기

이러한 문제를 인식해서인지 3기에서 비중 조절이 되었다.

일단 아이기스의 퇴마사인 리온의 비중은 심각하게 줄어드는 것을 넘어 등장조차 잘 하지 못하고 있고, 또한 신입 캐릭터 사라 역시도 첫 등장 화(3기 9화)의 활약 이후로는 비중이 거의 없다.[21]

이에 반해 주인공인 하리와 두리가 훨씬 더 주인공 답게 활약하는 묘사가 늘어났다. 심지어 퇴마사나 도깨비없이 문제를 해결하거나 두리의 고스트볼 사용 비중을 더 늘어났다. 또한 가은이와 현우는 각 파트별로 메인 주연 캐릭터로 활약 중이다.[22] 어둠의 퇴마사에 들어서 다시 등장한 주비의 능력으로 고스트볼의 쿨타임을 초기화 할 수 있게 된 점도 많이 상향에 영향을 주었다.

메인 스토리 또한 퇴마사 관련이 아니라 연금술사, 지박령 등을 주요 소재로 삼아서 호평을 받고 있다.

그렇지만 퇴마사들만 여전히 제한 없이 능력을 쓸 수 있다는 점은 문제로 지적되고 있다. 이것을 두고 퇴마사들의 능력을 다운그레이드 해야 한다는 의견이 계속 요구되고 있다.[23]

4.2. 4기

그러나 4기 들어서 퇴마사 관련 문제점이 다시 지적되기 시작했다. 2기 때 비판을 받았던 퇴마사를 메인 스토리 소재로 잡았고, 3기 때도 퇴마사답지 않다고 비판이 심했던 강림의 복장 문제가 여전하며,[24] 백사첩, 철륜귀 편에서는 불필요하게 퇴마사를 개입시켰다고 비판을 받았다. 이로 인해 퇴마사 캐릭터를 우려먹는다는 비판과 명색이 주인공인 하리의 서사가 없다는 비판이 나왔다.

그나마 파트 1에서는 최강림이 잠시 어머니의 산사로 간 사이 신 캐릭터인 귀도 현이 그 자리를 대체했고, 비중도 의외로 치고 빠지기를 잘해서 하리 일행의 활약을 해치진 않았다. 물론 당시 강림의 행적이 공감이 안 가고 답답하며 캐릭터 붕괴라는 논란이 존재한다.

4.3. 5기

또다시 강림과 리온이 메인이며, 메인 스토리에서 하리의 역할과 활약이 별로 없어서 큰 비판을 받고 있다.[25] 그리고 하리&두리 남매의 아이템이 고스트볼이 박살난 뒤 수리가 되었으나 귀신소환의 시간제한이 생겼다는 치명적 페널티가 붙어 강림과 리온은 무기 업그레이드가 되는 판국에 고스트볼을 오히려 너프시키냐는 비판도 있다. 게다가 신캐 김청하의 정체가 귀도퇴마사로 밝혀지며 또 퇴마사 신캐냐는 반응이 있다.[26]

그나마 강림과 리온의 비중을 줄인 호러 에피소드도 꽤 있는 등 비중에선 신경을 쓴 걸로 보인다. 그러나 신캐, 메인 스토리의 퇴마사 편중 문제는 여전하다. 거기에 더욱 심해진 강림의 막장 행적은 물론이고, 귀도퇴마사의 편애 문제까지 떠올랐다. 자세한 것은 귀도퇴마사/비판 문서 참조.

25화 시점 귀도 청(청하)가 하리 일행과 라미아를 잡는 일에 합류했기에 시즌6부터 하리 일행과 함께할지 아니면 진짜 자신이 살아갈 길을 갈 것인지 지켜봐야 알 수 있을 것 같다. 이것도 비중 문제로 번질 수 있다. 그러나 청하가 생사불명 상태로 처리되면서 퇴마사 신캐 추가로 인한 비중 문제로 번지진 않게 됐다.[27] 비중 문제를 피하려면 청하가 되살아나선 안 된다는 의견도 존재한다.

5. 결론

이런 문제를 두고 일부 팬들 사이에서는 "하리가 이 시리즈의 주인공이므로 하리한테 최강림, 리온, 이안과 같은 본격적인 퇴마 능력이나 고스트볼에 전투 기능을 줘야 한다"[28][29], "강림이나 리온의 능력을 너프시켜 다른 캐릭터들과 밸런스를 맞춰야 한다", "이쯤 되면 편애가 아니라 자캐딸이다" "퇴마사의 개입이 없는 에피소드를 더 늘려야 한다" 등의 주장이 나오기까지 했다.

정 퇴마사를 밀어줘야 한다면 차라리 최강림이나 리온을 주인공으로 하는 스핀오프 애니를 만들거나 굿즈나 서비스신으로 밀어 주는 것도 대안이 존재한다. 신비아파트 특별판: 빛의 뱀파이어와 어둠의 아이가 그런 예시.

그 외에 퇴마사들도 어떻게 보면 피해자라는 주장도 나왔다. 사실 최강림과 리온은 기본적으로 선한 성격이어서, 이 둘에 대해선 자캐 덕질마냥 편애를 해대는 제작진들에 의해 희생된 피해자라는 의견도 있는 등 나름 동정하는 팬들도 있기는 하다.

퇴마사 캐릭터로 인한 문제가 개선되지 않자 이로 인해 지친 시청자들은 "퇴마사 없이 일반인과 도깨비 위주로 진행해야 한다.", "남캐를 밀어줄 꺼면 밸런스 문제가 없는 두리나 현우를 밀어줘라"등의 반응이 나오기까지 했다. 심지어 신비아파트 시리즈는 사실 하리&두리 남매는 페이크 주인공에 불과하고 최강림과 퇴마사들이 이 애니메이션의 진 주인공이라는 불만도 간간히 나오고 있다.

비중과 파워밸런스를 다시 조정하지 않은 이상 이런 평가는 사라지지 않을 것처럼 보인다.

[1] 이 때는 요아힘과 지하국대적 등 극히 일부를 제외하면 대다수 귀신들한테 약점이 있어서 하리 같은 민간인도 약점을 찾아내면 퇴치가 가능했다. 예를 들면 하리가 오르골을 파괴해서 마리오네트 퀸을 무력화시킨 경우가 있다.[2] 심지어 이때는 퇴마사인 강림도 어느 정도 머리를 써서 귀신과 싸우거나, 하리와 협력했다.[3] 다르게 말하면 퇴마사같이 강력한 캐릭터는 호러물과는 상극이다.[4] 심지어 최강림과는 비교할 수 없는 강자들이다. 강림이 성인이 된 후라도 당연히 이 셋보다는 약할 것이다.[5] 2기 1쿨 및 극장판 1기 까지는 신호등 배트[6] 이건 4기 때 귀도 염이 고스트볼 소환을 남발하려다 악귀로 타락해버리고 만 부작용이 나오며 제한을 없앨 수는 없다는 것이 나오기는 했지만 이것도 퇴마사 캐릭터 밀어주기 하려고 고스트볼의 약점을 개선하는 게 아니라 대충 시청자들 불만 수습하려고 급조한 설정이 아니냐는 비판의견도 있다.[7] 딱 한 가지, 세피르카드 사용 시 많이 쓸 수록 체력이 많이 소모된다는 언급은 있었다.[8] 적어도 원귀 퇴치의 경우는 퇴마사 입장에서는 원귀(=죽은 인간의 영혼) 자체를 소멸시키면 안 되고 원귀는 제압 후 위로해서 승천시켜야 하니까, 전력을 다해 싸울 수 없으며 퇴마사는 그들의 전투력의 많아봐야 50%밖에 못 쓴다는 묘사라도 필요하다.[9] 그나마 가은은 귀신의 빙의 능력과 전생 샤를리엔(3기 1쿨 한정)의 과거를 지니고 있는데 후자의 배경으로는 실질적인 도움을 준 적이 있다. 현우는 3기 2쿨에서야 카페를 통한 가짜 퇴마사 활동과 자신의 도구를 확보해 도움을 주기 시작했으나 문제는 저 활약도 3기 한정이며 그 이후로는 저 둘이 큰 활약을 한 경우가 없는데 그나마 가은은 이안과의 접점이 있기에 취급이 나은 편이지만 현우는 4기부터는 3기 때 사용했던 도구를 사용하지 않아 또다시 귀신 퇴치에서 가장 실질적 도움을 줄 수 없는 쩌리 캐릭터로 전락해버리고 말았다.[10] 인형술사와 주운은 조선시대 사람이고, 파르켈은 최소 500년전 유럽 사람이다.[11] 인간인 귀도염이 개조한 사례가 있기는 하나, 그 부작용으로 흑화되어 악귀가 되었다. 베테랑 정식 퇴마사인 귀도염조차도 고스트볼 개조를 시도했다가 변을 당할 정도면, 일반인이 개조를 시도했다간 더 위험해지는 것은 자명하다.[12] 리온이 뱀파이어 L과 마주치기 전부터 그 기운을 느끼고 경계하거나 루만이 당시 일반인 신분의 7살 어린아이였던 리온에게 있는 어둠의 힘을 알아차리는 장면들로 퇴마사들은 이종족과 퇴마사로서의 기운을 알아차릴 수 있다는 묘사가 나왔다. 그러나 강림은 하리가 모주귀를 소환하여 부리는 모습을 보고선 "어떻게 귀신을 다룰 수 있는 거지? 보통 사람한테는 불가능한 일일 텐데."란 발언을 하며 의아해했는데, 이는 하리한테서 퇴마사로서의 가능성이 보였다면 나오지 않을 반응이다.[13] 또한 하리가 퇴마술을 배울 수 있었을 시, 강림과 리온은 자신이 좋아한다는 하리가 매번 귀신에게 시달리는 피해를 보는데다가 하루에 한번만 쓸 수 있는 고스트볼이 없으면 귀신에게 대항하지 못하고 본인들과 다른 누군가가 항상 하리를 지켜줄 수 없다는 사실을 알면서도, 하리한테 퇴마술 수업 제안을 하거나 퇴마술을 익힐 수 있다는 사실을 알리지 않아서 그녀의 성장 가능성을 막고 그녀를 자기 입맛대로 통제하려했다는 캐릭터 붕괴를 당하게 된다.[14] 1기 불가살이편 때와 2기 구미호 편 때 리온이 그랬었다.[15] 예외로 마리오네트 퀸의 경우 원귀였지만 개입했으나, 마리오네트 퀸과 직접 싸우지는 않았다. 또 팬텀 토르소와 키클라스, 객귀는 악귀였지만 최강림이 개입하지 않았다.[16] 귀신 소모 문제는 철륜귀 편에서 나온 불만이었다.[17] 작중 유일한 퇴마사였던 강림은 한국식 퇴마 기술을 사용하였으며 억지로 생긴 캐릭터 느낌도 없었다.[18] 이쪽은 아예 캐릭터 비중 문제 더 생길 텐데 굳이 만들 필요가 있었냐는 비판이 존재한다.[19] 철원군의 마스코트지만 이 작품에 한해서 퇴마사로 나온 것.[20] 예외적으로 3기는 퇴마사들의 비중을 낮추고 하리 일행을 띄우는 전개여서 사라는 조역, 사토룡을 봉인한 퇴마사는 단역으로 그친다. 2기의 진명도 만악의 근원이지만 단역 정도의 위치로 나온다.[21] 초반에 바로 리타이어 상황(10화)이거나 아예 등장을 하지 않은 상황(11화)을 맞이했다! ~~다만 11화는 강림과 리온은 아예 등장하지 않았고 현우나 가은조차도 비중이 현저히 적었다~~[22] 다만 애초 비중이 작았던 리온과 사라에게는 도매금으로 불공평한 것으로 보인다.[23] 저 문제점은 개선되기는 커녕 오히려 악화되었는데 5기의 고스트볼인 고스트볼 ZERO는 오히려 1~4기의 고스트볼들과 비교해 상당히 골때리는 단점이 있는데, 너무 무리해서 고쳤기 때문에 역으로 당하거나 소환해제를 하지 않는 이상 기존의 고스트볼과는 달리 시간제한이 있어 전투할 수 있는 시간이 더 짧아진대다 그 제한시간이 너무 짧은 등 소환 횟수를 1~2회 늘린다라거나 하는 버프를 먹여도 시원찮을 판국에 오히려 너프를 먹이는 짓을 저질렀다. 그에 비해 강림은 점점 퇴마검이 업그레이드되어가고 있으며 리온의 경우에도 클리프카드라는 신규 아이템을 줬는데 이거 또한 고스트볼에 비하면 사용 페널티가 없다시피 하다.[24] 이로 인해 방영 이전부터 아예 기대가 안 된다고 한 팬들도 있었다.[25] 비슷한 비판이 나온 4기에서 하리는 현을 갱생시키는 데에 큰 비중을 차지했다.[26] 다만 청하가 선의 환생이나 부활, 빙의체라는 설은 뇌절이라는 평이 많아서 그와 관련없는 순수 퇴마사로 밀고 나간 것에 대해 긍정적 평도 존재한다.[27] 물론 현은 살아났지만 두리 수준으로 비중을 줄이거나, 전용 에피소드를 만든다면 비중 문제는 적거나 없게 될 것이다.[28] 심지어 하리는 비록 일반인이지만 보통 일반인보다 신체 능력이 몇 배는 더 강하다. 이러한 하리의 신체적 장점 활용과도 연결되는 부분이다.[29] 다만 하리마저도 퇴마술을 배우면 일반인이 활약하는 본래 주제는 완전히 사라지며 정말로 '퇴마사 아파트'가 되어버린다.
