수고 14m, 뿌리 부근 둘레 6.4m에 수령은 370년 정도로 추정된다. 국내에 현존하는 밤나무 중에 가장 크고 오래된 나무다. 원래는 천연기념물 제 97호였던 주문진 교향리의 밤나무가 가장 컸지만 1990년대에 고사했다. 그 이후 2008년에 이 나무가 천연기념물로 지정되며 가장 큰 밤나무의 명성을 이어가게 되었다.운교리 밤나무는 밤의 결실량이 3~4가마 정도로 많았고, 나무의 크기도 굉장히 컸기 때문에 명성을 떨칠 정도로 좋다하여 영명자(榮鳴玆)라 불리기도 했다. 하지만 현재는 밤의 크기도 작아지고 수확량도 줄었다.
밤나무는 도로 옆 비탈지에서 자라고 있는데, 바로 아래에 집이 생겨 공간이 좁아졌고, 석축을 쌓아 보강했지만 여전히 나무로부터 1.5m 거리에 불과해 뿌리가 생육할 면적이 협소하다는 지적을 받아왔다. 집은 식당으로 바뀌었다가 현재는 철거되어 주차장으로 바뀌었다.

평창 운교리 밤나무 앞 도로는 과거 영동과 영서를 잇는 중요한 교통로로, 이 밤나무 앞이 과거 운교역창(雲橋驛倉)의 마방(馬房)으로 전해지며 성황당도 있어 이 나무가 잘 보존될 수 있었다.
이 밤나무는 옛날에는 ‘명성을 떨칠 정도로 좋다’하여 영명자(榮鳴玆)라 부르며 3∼4가마씩 수확하였고 현재까지 알려진 밤나무 중에서 가장 크고 오래되었을 뿐 아니라 생육이 양호하여 재래종 과일나무로서의 학술적 가치가 매우 크다.
