1. 개요

여러 도시에 존재하는 도로명. 말 그대로 도시 중앙에 있는 길이라는 뜻이다.

2. 특징

'중앙로'란 이름 그대로 해당 도로의 구간이 실제 그 지역의 지리적인 위치상 중앙인 곳도 있고, 위치상 중앙은 아니지만 해당 지역의 중심적인 기능을 하는 곳(도심지역)을 지나는 도로인 경우도 있다.

이들 중 상당수가 일제강점기에 붙은 것이다. 일본에서도 '마을 중앙 길'이라는 의미로 '中央通'(주오도리)라는 이름을 자주 쓰는데(주소/일본) 해방 이후 中央通가 '중앙로'로 바뀐 것이 많다. 이러한 경우 법정동 이름으로도 쓰이며 丁目가 붙던 흔적으로 '-○가'가 붙기도 한다. 나이 든 사람들은 中央通를 한국식으로 읽어 '중앙통'이라고도 부른다.

도로명주소 실시 후 대로-로-길 체계가 도입되면서 많은 중앙로가 중앙대로로 개칭되었다. 읍면 지역에는 '중앙길'도 있다. 또한 여러 개가 있어 숫자로 구분한 중앙n길도 존재한다. 그리고 지역 이름을 넣어서 '○○중앙로'라고 붙이기도 한다.

주로 중심지 번화한 곳에 이 이름이 붙기에 도시철도 역도 이 이름을 딴 곳이 있다.[1]

3.7. 과거에 존재했던 곳

존재했던 곳으로는 부산광역시, 대구광역시, 구미시[6][7], 김천시, 성남시, 안산시, 양양군[8], 구 연기군, 의정부시, 창원시, 부천시 등이 있다.

의정부시의 테마공원인 행복로가 과거 2009년 6월까지 도로였을 때 버스와 차량이 많이 다니던 중앙로라 불려왔었다. 행복로가 중앙로였던 시절에 의정부시 일반시내버스의 종점이자 회차점이기도 했는데, 그 옆에 31, 51, 55번이 종점이었던 구터미널(평안운수 의정부 차고지)이 있었기 때문이다. 물론 현재는 시민에게 친숙한 행복로로 바뀌고 로데오거리가 함께 조성되어 문화의 거리로 바뀌었기 때문에 이제는 추억이 되었다.

4. 법정동 목록

일제강점기 中央通(주오도리)의 흔적으로 법정동 이름으로도 간혹 쓰인다. 丁目가 전환된 '-○가'가 주로 붙는다.

미국에서도 '센터 스트리트'(Center Street), '센트럴 스트리트'(Central Street) 등 한국으로 치면 '중앙로'로 번역될 도로명을 종종 쓴다. 뉴욕시 맨해튼에도 Centre Street이 존재한다. 세계적으로 잘 알려진 브로드웨이 근처이다.

일본에서는 한국의 '중앙대로'에 해당하는 명칭을 보통 [ruby(中, ruby=ちゅう)][ruby(央, ruby=おう)][ruby(大, ruby=おお)][ruby(通, ruby=どお)]り(주오오도리)라고 부르는 편이다.

가끔 밀덕들이 미드웨이를 중앙로라고 부를 때가 있다.
