이전 앨범인 The Stranger와 다른 느낌을 내기 위해 다양한 재즈 뮤지션을 고용해 신선한 사운드를 내려고 한 앨범이다. 제목은 세기 중반 뉴욕시의 재즈 중심지 중 하나인 52번가를 가리킨다. 빌리 조엘의 레이블은 음반 발매 당시 52번가에 본사가 있었고, 녹음이 진행된 스튜디오도 CBS빌딩에서 한 블록 떨어진 52번가에 있었다.이 앨범은 빌리 조엘의 첫 번째 빌보드 200 1위 앨범이 되었고 빌보드 핫 100에서는 4개의 곡이 40위 안에 들었다. 또한 그에게 올해의 앨범상을 포함한 2개의 그래미상을 안겨주었고 많은 비평가들에게 호평을 받았다.
